Description

To commemorate the release of CSNY’s soundboard album “COMPLETE WOODSTOCK 1969,” which captures a historic moment in rock music in the 1960s, we have prepared a precious soundboard recording of the band. CSNY rose to stardom after their huge success at Woodstock, but Crosby lost his girlfriend in a traffic accident, and they temporarily suspended their activities. During this period, there is a precious recording of Stephen Stills and Graham Nash on stage alone. It was during an intermission at a live performance by the two giants of Cisco, Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead, at Winterland in San Francisco on October 25th. Stills and Nash, introduced by Bill Graham, appeared at the end of the Airplane’s set, which had been on stage earlier. The two performed a short acoustic set. However, the combination of Stills and Nash limited the songs that could be performed, and half of the performance was blues by Stills alone, and there was also a cover of “How Have You Been” by John Sebastian, who had a close relationship with Stills and participated in the CSNY session at the time, and even the traditional “Lonesome Valley”, which was interesting because it was all songs that had nothing to do with the CSNY stage at that time. The best part was the performance of the new song “Teach Your Children”, which had just started recording in the studio the day before. Naturally, this performance was the live premiere. As you know, this song was sung by Nash and Stills, so it was perfect for playing under these circumstances. In addition, since it was still in production, both of them sang very carefully. On the contrary, the arrangement of the backing vocals had not yet been decided, and Stills was humming the part that would be sung later, which is unique to the production. This is an extremely valuable recording that proves that this song, which would later become not only CSNY’s signature song but also a rare masterpiece representing the Woodstock generation, was already being performed live at this time. And Stills’ skills as a blues guitarist are at their best in “Crossroads” and “Black Queen”, which are also impressive. What’s even more pleasing is that this extremely valuable stage was recorded on a soundboard by the Grateful Dead! This was also recorded from the master reel, so the sound quality is excellent. Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco, CA, USA 25th October 1969 SBD (21:49) 1. Bill Graham Intro 2. Crossroads 3. Teach Your Children 4. How Have You Been 5. Lonesome Valley 6. Black Queen SOUNDBOARD RECORDING
