Description

This 57-minute recording was taken on October 24th, Denver, from his US solo tour in 1979, using stereo soundboard recordings from the FM on-air master at the time. First of all, it is not a complete recording because it is a broadcast recording, but it was a time when he was actively performing live, having performed in Japan with Jeff Beck the previous year, and participating in a tour as a member of the New Barbarians in the spring of that year. In addition, it was the year that his solo album “I WANNA PLAY FOR YOU” was released, so the live performance mainly features songs from that album, as well as RTF’s “Hymn Of The 7th Galaxy,” which was the opening song, and a condensed version of the representative repertoire from his solo album. He also performs standards such as Mingus’ “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat,” a familiar song to Beck that would later be included on “If This Bass Could Only Talk.” In addition, the band’s performance is of course excellent, with Simon Phillips, who accompanied Beck on his visit to Japan, as his partner in the rhythm section, and the horns, which include Alfred Williams and Al Harrison, who also participated in “I Wanna Play For You,” also show off their colorful sounds. And the star of the show is Stanley’s lead bass, with his solos that stand out even more than those of Jeff Beck and the New Barbarians, and are full of dynamism. This is a must-listen collector’s edition for fans who can say that he is at his best. Recorded at Rainbow Theater, Denver, CO, USA October 24th 1979 : Soundboard Recording 1.
