Description
This recording captures Sheila E.’s live performance at the NSJ Festival on July 11, 2013, in its entirety and with stunning soundboard recordings! The first half, centered around tracks from her album “Hella Fonk E,” opens with “Love Is Now,” followed by the Latin track “El Alma De Carnival” (credited to Pete Escobedo and featuring Sheila herself), followed by the funk ode to Oakland bands like “Oakland N Da House.” This is followed by the intro to Tower of Power’s “Fanfare Mantansuka,” followed by covers of “Stroke 75” and “Oakland Stroke” in a flowing style, followed by the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” and a cut from that album. Pete Escopedo, turning 90, was introduced, followed by Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing.” Cha-Cha and Sheila introduced Pete’s “La Cuna.” Sheila modestly admitted she might recognize the song before the Prince song “A Love Bizarre” finally arrived. Lynn then covered Mays’ “Happy Feelin’,” featuring Sheila’s vocal riff from “I’ll Take You There.” Then came “When the Saints Go Marching In,” a song Prince also covered live. Sheila’s tear-jerking cover of “The World Needs Love,” a song written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach and originally performed by Jackie DeShannon, not Dionne Warwick, and played by Los Angeles radio stations until President Kennedy’s death the following day. Finally, the show concluded with the long-awaited “The Glamorous Life.” Not only Prince, but you can also learn about Sheila’s roots through this top-quality soundboard live performance.
