Description

Roy Ayers, a vibraphonist, began his music career in post-bop jazz and formed Ubiquity in the 1970s. Ubiquity means to popularize something universal, but his achievements in quickly fusing jazz and funk, a well-matched musicality, and firmly establishing the jazz-funk genre are immeasurable. Three of Ayers’ professional shot live performances will be released on Blu-ray, totaling three hours in 1080P HD quality. First up is the 2011 North Sea Jazz Festival. The Robert Glasper Experiment performance begins with the first half, which is led by Cathay Benjamin’s comfortable saxophone phrases, followed by the intoxicating jazz instrumental “Beautiful Changes” with Robert Glasper’s elegant piano. After the introduction by the bandmaster Robert, Roy Ayers and others join in on “Everybody Loves The Sunshine,” and Roy’s hoarse vocals and Ray Gaskin’s saxophone provide a melancholy space at once. Then Roy introduces hip-hop DJ Pete Rock as Chris Rock, and Pete is entrusted with the female chorus and backing to perform “Don’t Stop The Feeling.” From the moderate blend of live sounds of Chris Dave’s drums, Ray’s saxophone, and Roy’s vibraphone, Glasper’s band comes in and the jam feeling gradually increases, which is nice. Roy is watching Glasper’s electric piano with a satisfied look on his face, and Pete’s JB voice is sampled, and Cathay uses the vocoder to play “We Live In Brooklyn, Baby” from “He’s Coming” in 1972, with a hip-hop feel. The unique melody of Roy’s vibraphone melts away. Then Pete Rock played dank songs by Al Green, Bee Gees, Cameo, Hall & Oates, Michael Jackson, etc. to the audience in a DJ set, and then “Running Away” came out, and Ray’s saxophone went wild again, and the band jammed until the end of the show. And then there was the Terminal Music & Arts Festival in 2016. This was a live performance by Roy Ayers’ band. You will be especially impressed by the drums of The B.B. & Q Band, Bernard Davis’ sense of timing, and his dexterity in adding songs. The thrill of the title track of the 1973 album “Red, Black & Green” and the spiritual, mellow, and liberating absolute masterpiece “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” are also divine with this band. The elegance of “Spirit Of Do Do” and “Life Is Just A Moment” from “Mystic Voyage” in 1975, and “I Wanna Touch You Baby” from the 1978 album “You Send Me” with Philip Wu on keyboards is amazing. “Black Family” from “Lots Of Love” in 1983 is great with Roy’s improvisational vocals and a flowing vibraphone solo. The last song is the opening song of “No Stranger To Love” in 1979, and the 32nd place on the R&B chart, a heavyweight song in the Dankla world, “Don’t Stop The Feeling”, with its exquisite balance of jazz funk and disco. It’s the best live performance specializing in coolness. And then there’s the Tiny Desk performance in 2018 with a simple lineup. Only Roy is on vocals, and his husky voice comes directly and vividly. You can see the divine Roy on the vibraphone in “Black Family”. The euphoric “Everybody Loves The Sunshine” also features keyboardist Mark Adams sampling the chorus to change the tone. Roy Ayers’ sound changes infinitely depending on the band members. And Roy’s generosity is such that he can accept them all. 3 hours goes by in the blink of an eye Beautiful Changes Everybody Loves The Sunshine Don’t Stop The Feeling We Live In Brooklyn, Baby Pete Rock DJ Set Running Away Roy Ayers – vocals, vibraphone Pete Rock, John Pressley – vocals Raeford Gaskins – saxophone Robert Glasper – piano Derrick Hodge – bass Chris Dave – drums Casey Benjamin – saxophone, vocoder Ahoy Hall, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, July 9. 2011 Intro Searchin’ Running Away Red, Black & Green Everybody Loves The Sunshine Spirit Of Do Do We Live In Brooklyn, Baby I Wanna Touch You Baby Black Family Life Is Just A Moment Don’t Stop The Feeling Roy Ayers – vocals, vibraphone John Pressley – vocal Donald Nicks – bass Bernard Davis – drums Everett Freeman Jr – keyboards Letnja Scena Kabare, Sombor, Serbia, Aug 4, 2016 Serching Black Family Everybody Loves The Sunshine Roy Ayers – vocals, vibraphone Mark Adams – keyboards Trevor Allen – bass Christopher De Carmine – drums NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert, March 1, 2018 Pro-shot 182min
