Description

The Rolling Stones’ 1972 US tour was the peak of their sharp sound, described as “rock ‘n’ roll dynamite” among enthusiasts. Nowadays, you can easily see the movie “LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,” which can be called the biggest souvenir produced from this tour, and in the underground world, there is even a huge item called “PHILADELPHIA SPECIAL.” However, all of them were compiled based on multiple performances, and the unexpected pitfall was that they were not able to enjoy a single performance. It is natural for enthusiasts to think that it would be nice to enjoy one performance with the best sound quality. The second show in Fort Worth on June 24th fulfilled the wishes of such enthusiasts. On this day, the filming for the previous movie and the multi-track recording for the live album that was ultimately shelved were recorded. However, the movie mainly included the first show and the take in Houston the next day, and the live album was mainly used in Philadelphia in July. Therefore, the second show in Fort Worth was sold off piece by piece. However, at the end of the century, a long version of the rough mix of the multi-track recording of the Fort Worth Second Show was leaked. Although the fact that “Happy” and “All Down The Line” were not included was a flaw, it was still a stereo soundboard recording that could be enjoyed without any exaggeration, and many items were produced. Among them, the VGP label’s “FORT WORTH EXPRESS” became the definitive version, and it became a literal best-seller, but the title “TARRANT COUNTY 1972” appeared and took its place, and it was distributed among enthusiasts. Although this sound source was originally a stereo multi-track recording, it was a leaked sound source. There was a roughness that seemed to have been dubbed several times, and there was a dilemma that it was often equalized to alleviate it. In that respect, the previous “TARRANT COUNTY 1972” stood out, but “FORT WORTH 1972 2ND SHOW” is a masterpiece of the same quality but with modern treatment. The monaural audience recording of the same day was used from the scene before the opening “Brown Sugar” performance to the beginning of the song, and the finish that connected it extremely smoothly was highly praised. Another factor that received high praise was that the MC that Mick made after the end of “Tumbling Dice”, which was a missing point on the sound board, was recorded up to “Thank you ve…”. The analog-like sound quality that gives a sense of warmth is also the same, and as a result of the above elements overlapping there, the 350 copies released in 2016 sold out in an instant. The classic is strong after all! At the same time, it was a result of the sound source having room for improvement. This re-release, six years after the original release, was also supervised by Graf Zeppelin, but the plan to have the audience make up for the two missing tracks was ruled out because it would have exceeded the capacity of one CD. Instead, Graf Zeppelin removed the low-frequency noise that was sometimes bothersome. This was especially noticeable in the quiet parts, but even suppressing this alone seems to have significantly reduced the roughness remaining in the original sound source. An even bigger problem, but one that had been completely overlooked until now, was the sound fluctuation that occurred in the middle of “Midnight Rambler”. This seems to have been a problem that had arisen from the time of multi-track recording, and was a phenomenon that was seen not only in the previously released versions mentioned so far, but also in “PHILADELPHIA SPECIAL”, which used this take. In fact, it seems that the movie “COOKSUCKER BLUES” was trying to create a thrilling scene by using the problematic sound fluctuation as it is. However, there is no doubt that it is a very unpleasant phenomenon to listen to, and the phrase played by Taylor at exactly 8 minutes, which starts at the latter half of the 6th minute, is even more unpleasant. Graf Zeppelin has finally started to address this major problem. They have achieved a different level of stability from the previously released version. It can be said that this is a problem that could only be fixed in 2021, when technology has evolved. The performance is a well-known and unparalleled masterpiece, and in “Gimme Shelter” and “Love In Vain” Mick Taylor plays enchanting phrases. In addition, the special cover “Don’t You Lie To Me” can be enjoyed with the best sound quality. Nevertheless, compared to the first show and Philadelphia, the full-length version of the second show, which was treated unfortunately as a small-scale release by each official, can be enjoyed with a wonderful stereo soundboard recording, making it an evergreen item. The latest version will be updated and re-released! (Remaster Memo) Phase correction. Vocals, which were slightly left-leaning, have been corrected to the center. Volume adjustment in places. Low-frequency noise (hum noise) removed. The low-frequency buzzing that was bothering me in places has been significantly reduced, making the sound clearer. The frequent pitch distortion (irregular pitch disturbance) that frequently occurs in the exchange part in the middle of Midnight Rambler has been corrected. The subtle but unpleasant distortion has been largely eliminated. It is definitely easier to listen to than the previous version.
