Description
Rare recordings of the album “STEEL WHEELS” were leaked twice, in 2006 and 2009, but while the 2006 version was mainly a rough mix of the album nearing completion, the 2009 version mainly contained earlier basic track recordings, which made enthusiasts go wild. The legendary masterpiece “TRAINING WHEELS” was released immediately after the surprising studio recordings. All of the recordings at this time were early tracks with almost no overdubbing, and the raw texture was so real that it was as if you were present at the studio session, which made enthusiasts very happy. However, more than 10 years have passed since the release of this masterpiece, and it is now completely difficult to obtain. However, this year, a video of the “STEEL WHEELS” session was leaked, and the session footage heard there will be released this week, so there is no doubt that “TRAINING WHEELS” should be reevaluated. Of course, this is not just a reissue of “TRAINING WHEELS”, but a remaster using the latest technology. Originally, this sound source had a texture that seemed to have been dubbed onto cassette several times, and although the sound quality was quite good, it was undeniable that it felt a bit rough. This equalization has mitigated that, making it clearer and easier to listen to. This alone makes the difference from the release more than 10 years ago clear. In addition, “IN THE AIR: STEEL WHEELS SESSIONS” is based on the sound (mono) of the video of the film crew, but this is a leak (stereo) from the original recording session tape, so it is even more important that this remaster has made it easier to listen to. In addition, the unreleased track “Giving It Up,” which first saw the light of day on “TRAINING WHEELS,” has been added to the more polished version that appeared on “FULLY FINISHED STUDIO OUTTAKES,” which caused a big stir a few years ago. That said, Mick’s vocals remain in the same rough state, and it’s a good example of how a solid mix can make a song sound so different. The last track is a different mix of the intro to “Mixed Emotions,” in which the organ sounds prominent. As you can see from the “IN THE AIR: STEEL WHEELS SESSIONS” DVD, Matt Clifford always played a modest organ during the sessions for this song, but this version is a mix where the volume of his organ is turned up just to try it out. This was a mix that only made it into the vinyl box sets released in recent years, and it has now been made into a groundbreaking CD that will make any enthusiast grin. But above all, the contents are a perfect complement to “IN THE AIR: STEEL WHEELS SESSIONS”. First of all, the first disc contains only basic tracks of songs with the same title, but the session scenes cannot be seen or heard, and it is like a glimpse of the continuation of the sessions at Montserrat. For example, “Continental Drift” is an early track based on programmed parts and has no vocal parts, which is a typical early version. “For Your Precious Love” is an unreleased cover that became a hot topic when the recording was leaked in 2006, but this was also included in a rougher stage. I was surprised by the fact that R&B covers were recorded during the sessions for the album, which had a rock band sound overall, but it’s true that there would not have been enough space for this classic R&B in “STEEL WHEELS”. DISC-2 finally links up with “IN THE AIR”, which is also very interesting. “Rock and a Hard Place” is a more advanced take than the one heard on “IN THE AIR~”, and you can tell that this was the OK take used for the album. Meanwhile, “Mixed Emotions” is the same performance as “Approximative Lyrics Mixed Emotions #2” on DISC-2 of “IN THE AIR~”. It is clear that this performance was the take for the album, and at the same time, Mick re-records his vocals only at the end, and his singing style is different from “IN THE AIR~” in that part, which is interesting. It is only by having both this title and “IN THE AIR~” that you can experience “STEEL WHEELS” even more realistically, and this masterpiece reappears at the perfect time. If you listen to “IN THE AIR~” first and then this title, you will feel as if you are witnessing the production of “STEEL WHEELS”.
