Description
After Lucca, the Barcelona performance took place on September 27th. The sound source for this day has just been released. I think many people have been able to get it and listen to it, but the audience recording recorded there is clearly “B-class” quality by the standards of 2017. In the first place, the sound image was far away, the cheers were irritating, and the bass was broken, so it was released only for enthusiasts who want to hear Barcelona first. Fortunately, a few days after this sound source, a new audience recording by a different taper appeared on the Internet. This new source should be called “recorder 2”, but it does not reach the quality of Hamburg and Lucca, which are the two giants of audience recording in this “NO FILTER” tour. On the contrary, it cannot be denied that it feels inferior to other performances that have been released so far. However, the sound quality is much better than the previously released “recorder 1”. That is the reason for this release. Compared to the audience recordings of previous performances, this is a sound image that gives a sense of distance, and this is thought to be the biggest weak point of this sound source. However, it is in a completely different dimension from the blurry sound image of “recorder 1”. The outline of the performance is very sharp, and the cheers do not hide the details of the performance. If you are a maniac who is accustomed to listening to audience recordings (no, the hurdle is not that high), it is definitely an excellent level and you can listen to it with ease. Although it is certainly a sound image with a sense of distance, the overall balance and clear texture are still very wonderful. And what is most attractive is the sense of realism that captured the enthusiasm of the excited Barcelona audience with a good balance. In “recorder 1”, this exceeded the level of realism and fell into a harsh balance. In that respect, this is an exquisite balance. The opening “Sympathy for the Devil” was actively chorused. The good thing about this recording is that, even though the excitement is intense, the strange voices and passionate singing that would cause stress to the listener are not flying around. In front of such a tremendous excitement, the Stones also play a good performance from the beginning. After the famous performance in Zurich, I thought they would just run up, but they didn’t let it go (lol). Unlike the first half of the Lucca show, which will be released at the same time, the Stones were in good form from the beginning of the show on this day. On this tour, the band’s engine was already full from “Tumbling Dice” without waiting for the two songs from “BLUE & LONESOME”, which will be the flash point. That’s why the performance of “Under My Thumb” is the best. This song has been treated as a regular song for the first time in a while on this tour, but at the same time, it also plays an important role in being a 60’s song that the Stones can play comfortably. Up until this point, the performance had been different from the beginning of the tour, but the only blemish on this day was the requested song “Rocks Off”. As usual, the atmosphere was a bit sluggish, centered around Charlie, and Mick also seemed to be unable to get into the song. This was probably due to a “blank” caused by the long absence from the performance. Still, it is admirable that the elderly Mick now sings the high-pitched melody part to Bernard, as he did on the 1994-95 tour, but he seems to be struggling to sing it through. Meanwhile, the excitement of the Barcelona audience was heating up, and in the following “Paint It Black”, I couldn’t help but laugh as I hummed along with Mick to the ending! It’s rare to see such a fun and exciting live performance. It’s only natural that they would sing the major song “Miss You”, but the fact that they even hummed this song is something you would expect from a concert held in a passionate country. In front of the Barcelona audience, who had shown such a tremendous excitement up to this point, “Midnight Rambler” became the best performance as if it overwhelmed them. The best performances were held in Zurich and Lucca this time, but the performance here was not inferior at all. The secret is Charlie’s inspired drumming, which was not seen since the start of the tour. Such developments were commonplace during the 2014 European tour when Mick Taylor joined every night, but it can be said that it was the first time on this tour. Let’s say that this is a masterpiece that captures the moment when the Stones “On Fire” in 2017. If Charlie is in the mood, the Stones’ performance voltage will rise this much. And on this day, the fact that rare or one-off repertoires were refrained from other than “Rocks Off” may have led to the greatness of the whole show. As the show drew to a close, the excitement of the Barcelona audience reached its peak, and the finale, “Satisfaction,” was another tremendous chorus storm. It was so intense that it seemed to heat up the listeners. As mentioned at the beginning, the sound source had a distant sound image, so the hall echo that occurred was mitigated by equalization, and the performance outline became sharper than the original sound source, realizing an upper feeling. For some reason, the sound source this time had a tingly texture between songs, and it was impossible to alleviate or adjust it, but still, it was promoted to a state that was much easier to hear than the original sound source, and above all, it became an item that you can enjoy the spectacular excitement without stress.
