Rolling Stones/MTV Special Japan Broadcast 1989

The Rolling Stones special program that was broadcast in Japan in the fall of 1989 as “MTV Awards Part 2” has been made into a DVD with amazing high quality that will amaze any fan. The recording time is 68 minutes, and the program features the Stones, who had just started their STEEL WHEELS US TOUR, with promotional clips, interspersed with light-hearted conversation between the two Japanese hosts. The program begins with a press conference held in New York on July 11th. The press conference was held to announce the new album “STEEL WHEELS” and the fall tour, and the Japanese subtitles read, “The big interest of the media is how successful the Stones, who have now reached the age of 45 to 52, will be in this tour.” This caption is very interesting and immersive, as it reminds us of 1989. The scene where Mick plays “Mixed Emotions” with a tape recorder over his shoulder and says, “That’s great!” to announce the new song is a very time-like scene. It’s fun to watch the familiar promo clips in this order, and the MTV interview with Mick and Keith on track 6 is very interesting as it feels like a cross-section of the era. It’s nice to see the MTV special spot on track 18 and the last track, the video of Mixed Emotions in Toronto on September 3, 1989, in such beautiful images. I’m sure there were many fans who were glued to this special late at night in the fall of 1989. In track 19, the two hosts say, “The Stones are coming back to Los Angeles for the first time in eight years on the 21st and 22nd of October, and all the tickets are sold out! But maybe they’ll come to Japan next year,” and “We’re really looking forward to it!” This conversation is something that could only happen at this time of year! It feels like it was just the other day, but in fact, it’s amazing to think that nearly 23 years have passed, and fans over 40 will be able to fondly reminisce about the fun times.
