Description

I was surprised to find out that there was a 4-channel stereo version of the King Biscuit sound source (hereinafter referred to as KBFH) from that 1973 European tour! But if you think about it, 1973 was a time when record companies and audio manufacturers were working together to promote 4 Channel. In this era, it would not be surprising if there was a 4-channel broadcast version of Europe 73. In fact, KBFH also conducted a 4-channel live broadcast in 1973, the most famous being The Who’s 1973 performance in Philadelphia. It was a famous broadcast among enthusiasts that even the LP “TALES FROM THE WHO” borrowed from that broadcast could be played on 4 channels. It is no surprise that in such an era, a 4-channel mix version of Europe was broadcast in 1973. However, in the latter half of 1974, when the Stones’ Europe 73 was broadcast on KBFH, it was the time when the oil shock hit and the decline of 4-channel audio, which was not even popular, began. I think that’s why there were almost no enthusiasts who recorded the broadcasts at that time. Still, the content that was broadcast was clearly unique. First of all, from the opening, it is clearly announced that this is a 4-channel stereo broadcast using the SQ system. With the SQ system, the so-called 4-channel separation is not so great, but it has the advantage of being able to tell the difference in the mix even when played in normal 2-channel stereo, for example, on many albums from Sony to Jeff Beck. A 4 channel version was released. Thanks to this, I can understand the difference in the 4-channel broadcast mix even when I listen to the CD normally. Overall, Keith and Mick Taylor’s guitars are rarely separated to the left and right, and Keith’s guitar is often placed in the middle. “Tumbling Dice” is the easiest to understand the difference in mix. Taylor’s lead is placed on the left, and the part where the song gets exciting in the second half, where you can clearly hear the sound of the piano played by Ian Stewart, which is rarely heard on normal broadcasts. Another characteristic of most songs is that the drums don’t spread as widely to the left and right as they do on regular broadcasts. What is most surprising of all is that unlike the regular broadcast, which was a take from Wembley Arena, here we have already recorded 74 takes of Brussels, two songs “Gimme Shelter” and “Happy” that later saw the light of day in the 1988 broadcast. It means that it was adopted as of the year. It is speculated that this was done to completely differentiate it from regular broadcasts. Of course, those mixes are also different from the 1988 version. Furthermore, even though “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” is not included, the editing after “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” is exactly the same as the regular broadcast version, so this is the 1974 version. This will prove that it is a different version. Contains an unexpected 4-channel version! Created from 4 channel reels. FRONT 2CH is closer to the bass and REAR 2CH is closer to the treble. (If you combine these two into 2CH, you get the sound of QUAD MIX.) FRONT MIX and REAR MIX not only differ in sound quality, but also in the stereo balance of each instrument/vocal. Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) is not included. 1. KBFH Intro. was recorded only on Rear 2channel, so this song has exactly the same sound on all three discs.
