Description
The Rolling Stones’ Wiltern Theatre in 2002, which was suddenly broadcast on BBC this month and surprised enthusiasts around the world. It was released in advance as “LIVE AT THE WILTERN THEATRE 2002: BBC BROADCAST” because it was a high-quality pro shot that would not be inferior even if it was released as a live DVD as it is, but of course the sound quality is perfect stereo sound board. If that were to happen, it would have the quality to be released as a live album with a limited press CD… so this week’s release will be realized. Anyway, it’s an outstanding stereo sound board. Not only enthusiasts, but even beginners will be able to listen to it without hesitation, it’s a perfect quality. Not only that, the finish of the total mix is also wonderful. As you know, the Stones’ live album is released in a “tight” form for better or worse, but the sound of the video broadcast this time is a stereo sound board that maintains a very raw texture. Therefore, it is a live album that can be enjoyed very much even if you listen to it only with the sound. Especially if it’s a “LICKS” tour or a theater gig. As enthusiasts may know, not only were a few songs from this day’s footage used on the live DVD “FOUR FLICKS,” but some performances were also used on the live album “LIVE LICKS” released later. This was an on-parade of overdubbing and editing, and the amount of cosmetic surgery made it the lowest-rated live album in the history of the Stones. This is obvious when you compare “Rock Me Baby” from Wiltern, which was used on the album, with this recording. The mixing itself is completely different in the first place, and the version on “LIVE LICKS” has been over-arranged, so the intimate atmosphere of the theater gig has disappeared. That alone would be fine, but the cosmetic surgery that was a specialty of this album has also been done quite a bit here. First of all, Keith’s guitar solo was replaced by him by overdubbing, and Ronnie’s solo was shortened and edited. Therefore, it was shorter than the actual performance time. If you listen to it in the raw state shown in this recording, you will be sure to see the difference. The appreciation of “LIVE LICKS”, which is already known as an unpopular live album, will finally fade. The wonderfulness of this mix makes the intimacy and roughness of the performance unique to theater gigs feel much more realistic. You can feel that even without seeing Keith’s sharp stage action in the previous video. Also, since this was the most aggressive period of the “LICKS” tour, the value of this sound source is immeasurable in that it reproduces the rough and powerful performance with perfect sound quality. As I said at the time of the video release, it is unavoidable that some performances were cut. However, it more than makes up for that with the exquisite mixing and the ease of listening because it fits on one CD. Even listening to only the audio, Mick’s shouts in the second half of “Stray Cat Blues” are already at a spectacular level, and it is typical of a theater to be able to explode the shouts that would normally be decided during studio overdubs at a live gig. I can’t help but think that this performance was a great one that should have been adopted by each official band. The previously released video also had a considerable impact, but this live album release is a shocking release that reminds us that the Stones were performing so hotly at the Wiltern in 2002 that they were almost burned. Moreover, it’s a great theater gig that can be listened to quickly on one disc, and we guarantee that it will be enjoyed by beginners and enthusiasts alike!
