Description

When you think of the Stones’ live recordings left behind by Mike Millard, you probably think of the series of LA performances held in 1975, but as part of the ongoing excavation of Millard’s masters by JEMS, we are discovering some of his lesser-known recordings. Stones documents have been unearthed. It is a record from the 1989 “STEEL WHEELS” tour. Of course, he made the recording here in LA as well. However, the “STEEL WHEELS” tour uses a basic stadium class venue, and even though it is the same, it is held at Memorial Coliseum instead of LA Forum. The show at the LA Memorial Coliseum in 1989 was held four times, interspersed with the schedule at New York’s Shea Stadium. Among the series of LA performances, the one that has been famous for a long time is the leaked professional shot video on the 19th in which Eric Clapton jumped in, but a few years ago, “LOS ANGELES 1989” was released based on the audience recording released by JEMS. 1ST NIGHT” was released as a limited press CD release, which is still fresh in my memory. As mentioned earlier, it was held at a large venue, and since it was the Stones’ first live tour in eight years, tickets were extremely hard to obtain, making it difficult for tapers to secure a good position, and the sound quality of the audience recording was particularly poor. It is also a tour that is not blessed with much. For that reason, even though it is a mirrored, the early stage is not a sound image that can be described as “just like a sound board”, but even at that point, the mirrored quality is full of power and the clearness is at a splendid level. As for the LA performance, audience recordings of all performances have been circulating among traders for a long time, but for the reason mentioned above, the sound image is far away, and it is also true that the recording state is overwhelmingly easy to listen to compared to those. While maintaining a good sense of distance, the sound image evolves into a more active state as the performance progresses. I would definitely say that it is an outstanding recording from the 1989 LA performance, and at the same time it is at a high level among the audience recordings that captured the 1989 tour. Also, this is typical of Millard, but there are no noisy spectators around. Since it is about him, it can be seen that he paid close attention to the recording environment even on the 1989 tour when it was difficult to get a good position. Especially from around “Rock and a Hard Place”, the sound image becomes powerful, and it is exactly like a mirrored recording. When it comes to “Midnight Rambler” and Keith’s two songs, it becomes even more amazing. Because it was a sound source from the later years of Millard’s recording career, and because it was not a so-called vintage period, the recording probably did not circulate among traders as much as expected. For this limited press CD release, the pitch, which was quite high, was accurately adjusted. From the perspective of enthusiasts who have already obtained it from the Internet, just having this problem resolved should be a big point. Furthermore, the cuts that occurred between songs are compensated for with audience recordings that have been available for a long time, so the result is that the entire live can be played back much more smoothly than the original version. On the contrary, his version includes the scene where Carmen is played at the end of the performance, the fireworks, and the welcome home announcement, which were not recorded in his version, making it even more enjoyable as a documentary. However, no equalization was added to cover up the delicate hiss that is characteristic of mirrored recordings. And what is surprising is the splendor of the Stones’ performance on this day. In particular, the high level of Mick’s sharp voltage is completely different from the performances where there are already released items such as the first day and the 19th. Not only was it a big city show where the Stones were excited, but the fact that there were two days off until returning to Shea Stadium after this day was probably the factor that made Mick fully open his engine. The shout is amazing. They sing quite intensely from the opening, and the new songs “Mixed Emotions” and “Midnight Rambler” are especially powerful, and that’s what happens at the end of the live, when they sing “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Midnight Rambler.” (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, the song reaches an epic level. On the other hand, the power of Keith’s guitar is also considerable. This is also vivid from around “Mixed Emotions”, and in the next “Honky Tonk Women” you can hear how he plays with the backing. Furthermore, the power of the intro is amazing even in “Before They Make Me Run” sung by Keith. For some reason, Mick didn’t sing at the beginning of “Harlem Shuffle” and only Bernard’s harmonization sounded empty, or perhaps it was because noise rang out from the equipment on the stage just before “Rock and a Hard Place” started. , such as the intro of the same song starting with only the rhythm section, and even hilarious scenes such as Keith trying to play the intro to “It’s Only Rock’n Roll (But I Like It)” even before the members were introduced. . Above all, just being able to enjoy the “STEEL WHEELS” American tour with mirrored quality is a great accomplishment, but what’s more, this day was a super hot performance! (Remastered memo) Adjusted the pitch slightly less than 30% of a semitone higher. We adjusted the mid-high range, which gives the impression that each instrument is crowded together, and the bass, which gives the impression of being cloudy, to create a sense of separation.
