Description

For several years, we have been releasing the sound source of the Stones’ 1989 US tour. As mentioned each time, it was difficult to find a good audience recording in real time during this period, and on the contrary, all the US tours that appeared from 1989 to 1990 were of dull sound quality. The one released this time was released in 1989 in a form that can be said to be typical of the one being released this time. The name of the item is “LOVE YOU LIVE IN LOS ANGELES”. The image on the black and white printed jacket shows the Stones’ sense of “SOME GIRLS” being out of sync. That alone made it a three-LP item with a full B-grade item feel, but what was even more dull was the sound quality. The original audience recording had a distant sound image, and the sound was thin and thin, and the recording was from a bad position, which created an unshakable B-grade feel. The label that released this “LOVE YOU LIVE IN LOS ANGELES” is Starlight. It fits perfectly with the image of an analogue rival label from the late 1980s to around 1990, at the end of the LP era. The fact that all the recordings of various artists were released in black and white printed jackets was quite dull even by the standards of the time. In a glorious era when the market had already been replaced by CDs and amazing quality items were being released one after another, it was a label that released only items that could not be helped but be considered anachronistic. As mentioned earlier, the lack of sense of the jacket alone was enough to reduce the appeal of the item, but in addition, the poor sound quality made it a regular at second-hand shops. If a good sound quality audience recording had been released with a different sound source after the transition to the CD era, the impression of the October 18th performance would have improved dramatically, but in that respect, the performance on this day was also unfortunate. That’s because the professional shot footage of the performance on the 19th, which was the next day’s show, was filmed for the venue’s screen and leaked after the tour ended. Naturally, the sound was recorded on a soundboard. That alone was enough to blow away the previous day’s lackluster sound quality, but the finishing touch was that Eric Clapton jumped in to “Little Red Rooster”. These elements overlapped, and among enthusiasts, the LA performance in 1989 was referred to as October 19th, which became a hoofprint. It was thought that the performance on October 18th would be buried in the gap between the “STEEL WHEELS” US tour (no, it was actually buried), but suddenly this year, a new audience recording of this day was supplied by JEMS. Moreover, it was the strongest tag team, familiar to us, Krw_co, who digitized the tape for the release. Although it is a new sound source supplied by them, it is a sound source that has been buried for nearly 30 years, so it does not reach the quality that can be declared excellent. As expected, the Stones’ popularity rekindled during the “STEEL WHEELS” US tour has many audience recordings in this state due to the difficulty of the recording environment. In terms of clarity and closeness of the sound image, the “OAKLAND 1989 1ST NIGHT” released a few weeks ago is probably the winner. However, what is more important about this sound source is that the recording condition is much more stable than Oakland. It cannot be compared to the poor sound quality of “LOVE YOU LIVE IN LOS ANGELES”. As expected, the sound image is closer than the LP, and although the quality is somewhat for enthusiasts, the sudden “listenability” is a big attraction. For its release, a major overhaul was carried out. It is natural to adjust the high pitch, and the muffled sound of the guitar and vocals has been greatly improved by equalization. In the case of good quality sound sources, it is often better to minimize equalization to bring out the charm of the original sound, but in the case of rough recordings like this (although not as bad as Oakland), equalization has a tremendous effect. If you are a maniac who has already obtained the original sound source this time, you will feel an overwhelming upper feeling when comparing it. Furthermore, the two parts of 2000 Light Years From Home and Jumping Jack Flash, where the intro was confirmed to be cut due to the tape change, have been carefully supplemented from the previous analog “LOVE YOU LIVE IN LOS ANGELES”. We aimed for a more complete version. On the other hand, more than a month has passed since the start of the tour, and this series of LA performances were held between the performances at New York’s Shea Stadium, so you can hear a wonderful performance with the big city switch turned on. However, it is true that there is no enthusiastic reaction to the new songs like in Oakland. It is only in a big city where casual fans also flock, and Mick even looks at the audience’s faces, saying “I’ll do a new song.” In addition, the recording itself is easy to understand, as the surroundings become quiet when “Undercover Of The Night” begins. The enthusiasm for other classic songs is remarkable, so the difference with the songs with a more indifferent reaction is captured. What’s even more interesting is that Keith only sang “Happy” on this day. It’s a famous episode in the United States that the audience starts heading to the toilet when Keith starts singing, but maybe Keith was also worried about that. Even so, it’s really rare for him to only sing one song. However, the performance itself is not rotten, but rather has high tension, and from around “Little Red Rooster” before that, the speed of the Stones on this day is also captured in real life. And this sound source is rare because it captures the fireworks and announcements after the show. When the announcement is played, you can even hear the sponsor (Budweiser) muttering bad things, so it’s a sound source that you can enjoy the documentary fun.
