Description
At first glance, it seems that most of the soundboards from the Rolling Stones’ 1981 US tour have been excavated, but in fact, there are certainly days on which they have not yet been excavated. A typical example is the second day of the LA Sports Arena. Unlike the first day, when there was a PA-out soundboard, no soundboards have been excavated on this day. Instead, the stereo audience recording has been telling us about the day’s appearance for a long time. Although it has a fairly rough sound quality and should be added to the category of rough recordings, it matches well with the wild performance of the day, and it was a sound source that was quite popular among enthusiasts. As if to tell the story, this sound source was released more than 20 years ago under the title “NEVER TOO OLD TO ROCK & ROLL” (hereinafter referred to as “already released”). A first-generation copy of the same sound source has recently appeared on the Internet. However, the recording condition is such that distortion occurs everywhere, and the opening “Under My Thumb” fades in, and the intros of “Beast Of Burden” and “Satisfaction” start slightly cut off, and so on, are the same as the previously released version. Compared to that, the texture is slightly less harsh and this version is. On the other hand, it is assumed that the previously released version also used a fairly low generation version in the era of cassette trading. What is more puzzling is that in this version, “Street Fighting Man”, which was not played that day, is inserted at the end of the live performance from the sound board on the first day in LA. This was unnecessary meddling. Rather, what should be noted is that the extreme pitch rise that occurred in the last two songs on the first CD, “Waiting On A Friend” and “Let It Bleed”, which were neglected in the previously released version, has been adjusted this time, making it much easier to hear. And what stands out throughout is the extremely wild performance of the Stones, centered around Mick. Compared to the official releases recorded in the middle and later stages of the tour, such as the movie “LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER” in Hampton, it’s like a completely different band. Mick in particular is incredibly high-tension, and his singing is so crisp that the expression “scream” fits perfectly. In addition, at the end of the live performance, there is a surprise in that Bobby Keys joins after “Brown Sugar”, following the first day in LA. And the already released version is now more than 20 years old, and there are probably many enthusiasts who have never heard the wild Stones of that day. It is an audience album captured with a texture that further impresses the hyper performance unique to the beginning of the 1981 tour (the distortion is more and more at the end of the live performance, but the power is also tremendous).
