Description

‘BBC SESSIONS 1963-1971’, praised by fans worldwide as the definitive Stones BBC recording with volume and sound quality easily surpassing the official ‘ON AIR’ release, has also sold out. For definitive titles of classic recordings like this, stable supply should be a given, regardless of reissues. Moreover, this time there is a significant reason that goes beyond a simple re-release. Prof. Stoned, who released this masterpiece in 2024, released a new version last year, which includes a new and astonishingly improved sound quality version of their 1971 ‘TOP OF THE POPS’ television appearance. Of the three songs performed on that appearance, only “Brown Sugar” has video footage that still exists, and it is well known that the other two songs were destroyed by the BBC, the king of archive destruction, so no video footage remains. However, Prof. Stoned unearthed audio recordings of the notoriously lost “Bitch” and “Wild Horses” that fans had plugged into the television screen. This boasts an incredibly clear sound quality, on a completely different level from the audio picked up from TV speakers that we’ve heard on previous items. Since these two songs were known to lack video recordings, we were grateful to hear even the conventional speaker recordings, but the day has finally come when we can hear them in a clear sound quality comparable to the familiar “Brown Sugar”! Only the beginning of “Bitch” was missed during recording, and that section was filled in with the conventional speaker recording, but this actually makes the difference in quality between this and the previous recording much clearer. Comparing the beginning of this song, the difference in sound quality is astonishing. Furthermore, in “Wild Horses,” surviving photographs reveal that Keith played a 12-string acoustic guitar during the recording, and it’s also clear that Mick Taylor added a new lead guitar track for the TV version. This was audible in the previous recordings, but hearing it with this new sound quality is a fresh experience. The discovery of these two surprising tracks alone is sure to bring tears of joy to fans, but the packaging has also been completely revamped this time. When it comes to BBC items, in the analog era, you’ll remember that the original TSP’s “BBC BROADCASTS” and the masterpiece “STONES AT THE BEEP” all used the same outdoor photograph taken in 1966 that was used on the back cover of the greatest hits album “BIG HITS.” So, for this re-release, we’ve used a photograph from the same photo session on the jacket. For many fans, when they think of BBC material, the image of that photograph from the “BIG HITS” back cover session is strong, and it will probably feel like “this is BBC.” The Stones’ BBC compilation, put together with Prof. Stoned’s superb skills, had a surprising discovery like “Around And Around” last time, but this time there’s an even more surprising improvement in the sound quality of “Bitch” and “Wild Horses.” Furthermore, as mentioned in online reviews, Prof. Stoned, dissatisfied with his previous work on Session #1, Session #4, and Session #12, has undertaken a brand new remastering project to further improve sound quality. This undoubtedly increases the value of this already highly acclaimed album set, which would be satisfying even with just two tracks.
