Description

Richard Thompson is Britain’s greatest guitarist and great songwriter. An original recording of a special concert celebrating his 70th birthday is now available. The anniversary show was held on “September 30, 2019 in London”. This is a superb audience recording recorded at the traditional venue “Royal Albert Hall”. This show is too special. A variety of guests are participating only in the legend’s birthday concert, but the number is huge. It was in the news because PINK FLOYD’s Dave Gilmore, Mark Ellington, Loudon Wainwright III, and Harry Sheeler (who played Derek Smalls in the movie “Spinal Tap”) participated, but that’s not all. . Family members such as ex-wife Linda Thompson, son Teddy, daughter Cami, Cami’s husband James Walbourne, grandson Zach Hobbs, as well as school classmate Hugh Cornwell of THE STRANGLERS, Dave Mattux of FAIRPORT CONVENTION and others. Bandmates such as Dave Pegg, Ashley Hutchings, Ashley’s son Blair Dunlop, Maddy Prior of THE ALBION BAND, and ally Danny Thompson will also be there. In addition, he has co-starred with Bob Mold, Kate Rusby, Damien O’Kane, Alistair Anderson, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Marie Waterson, Christine Collister, Olivia Cheney, Judith Owen, and many more… …. New and old band members and friends who have collaborated with Richard on each other’s works appear one after another. A total of 32 musicians participated and performed together to praise the legend’s achievements. It was a once-in-a-lifetime night of co-starring, and this work, which vacuum-packed the scene, is a truly exquisite audience recording. This is an original recording by a master who is known as the “British Master” at our store, but this person is also a living witness of the scene that has continued to record the scene of British rock. I am familiar with all the live spots around London, but in particular, the Royal Albert Hall is a garden where many bands and artists have recorded masterpieces. In particular, this work was recorded from close to the stage in the second row, and the core is powerfully captured despite the warm sound of DAT recording. On top of that, the subtle hall sound that rises from the bright core embodies the elegance of a traditional venue, and beautifully enhances the performance and singing voice without muddying them up. Rather than aiming for a sound board-like close-up feel, you can enjoy the warm mood of celebrating a legend’s birthday, and even though there are many guests, you can enjoy each individual’s singing voice and performance. It is a rich recording that embodies the beauty unique to the audience. The show drawn with that beautiful sound is the life of this work. A huge repertoire of 34 songs is played, but the only regular style is the opening “The Storm Won’t Come”. The other 33 songs are all special performances with guest participation. The contents are diverse. In addition to FAIRPORT CONVENTION and solo masterpieces, other projects, covers, and even guest songs will be performed. Let’s organize the contents here. ●FAIRPORT CONVENTION (3 songs)・Jack O’ Diamonds/Who Knows Where The Time Goes/Meet On The Ledge ●RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON (5 songs)・Down Where The Drunkards Roll/Withered and Died/The Great Valerio/I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight/Dimming Of The Day ●Solo and others (8 songs)・The Storm Won’t Come/Turning Of The Tide/Beeswing/Persuasion/Ghost In The Wind/Keep Your Distance/That’s Enough/Sweetheart On The Barricade ●Guest songs (13 songs)・Hugh Cornwell: Peaches/The Most Beautiful Girl in Hollywood・Bob Mold: If I Can’t Change Your Mind・Kate Rusby: As The Lights Go Out・Martin Carthy : Fare Thee Well/Fine Horsemen・Eliza Carsey: Hug You Like A Mountain・Olivia Chaney: House On The Hill・Maddy Prior: Gray Funnel Line/Sheath and Knife・Harry Sheeler: She Puts The Bitch In Obituary・Loudon Wainwright III: The Swimming Song・Dave Gilmore: Fat Old Sun ●Other covers (5 songs)・Tobacco Road/Blues In My Bottle/The Bonnie Lass O’ Fyvie/Madame Bonaparte/Cry Me A River… , it looks like this. It’s hard to tell that covers of trad and standards belong to anyone, and there are many cases in which Richard has participated in the original guest songs, so it’s not strict, but I think you can understand the variety. Moreover, among these, the only guest solos are “The Great Valerio” and “House On The Hill.” All the others are full of co-stars in which Richard appears. Each song is a series of special co-stars, so everything is worth listening to, but the biggest highlight is definitely Dave Gilmore. Gilmore appears at the end of the show. Warm applause occurs when a guest is called for any song, but the excitement similar to the roar that is invited by the words “PINK FLOYD’s Dave Gilmore!” is still special. Gilmore briefly responded to the welcome by saying, “Good evening, thank you,” and began to gently sing RICHARD & LINDA THOMPSON’s “Dimming Of The Day.” Richard’s chorus overlaps with Gilmore’s voice singing lead, and Richard responds to Gilmore’s relaxed solo with a tasteful solo. That gentle world naturally continues into “Fat Old Sun,” and unfolds dramatically. Of course Gilmore sings, but the highlight is the guitar solos that the two take turns. They talk with each other in phrases that are full of flavor and exhilaration, and expand rapidly and dynamically… Gilmore’s voice rides Richard’s melody, and Richard plays Floyd’s song. Not only are both of them extremely valuable, but they are also a gorgeous co-star with exquisite compatibility with each other. It sounds like the audience has reached their climax, but the real highlight comes right after. Richard starts singing FAIRPORT CONVENTION’s “Meet On The Ledge” while leaving Gilmore on the stage amidst the excitement. The guests of the day appeared on stage one after another as if invited by the performance and singing voice, and it was no longer possible to tell how many people were on stage, creating a huge all-star collaboration that was exciting. And when all of that is over, the whole venue erupts into a birthday song, and the great collaboration of the century comes to a close. A huge number of guests, a never-ending series of famous songs, and a constant stream of precious co-stars. Rock history is full of various collaborations and special performances, but there are no nights as luxurious and intense as this one. This work is a 3-disc set where you can fully experience the entire story from the second row and immerse yourself in the beautiful sounds that touch your heart. A live album that is not available anywhere else in the world and can only be experienced with this work.
