Description

The live performance at Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka, the first day of the Japan tour by the instrumental project Portnoy Sean Macapaine Sherinian, is completely recorded in ultra-high quality audience recording from the original master, which is not available on the Internet or among traders. (The recorder is Taper, who recorded the Nagoya performance of Asia (LIVING A LEGACY) with miraculous super high sound quality. This time, it is also recorded with unbelievable super high sound quality.) The members are Mike Portnoy of former DREAM THEATER, Billy Sheehan of MR. BIG, Tony MacAlpine, who appeared in the fast-playing boom of the 80s and was called the black Yngwie, and is known for his work with Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge in M.A.R.S. and Mark Boals in RING OF FIRE, and Derek Sherinian, who is known for his work with Alice Cooper and YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, DREAM THEATER, and in recent years, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION with Glenn Hughes. It can be said that this is a dream project with members with the highest technical skills in the modern metal world. The project was originally formed as a live performance to be held at the NAMM SHOW, the largest musical instrument show in the United States, in January 2012. Prior to this concert, Mike Portnoy and Billy Sheehan formed a band called BAD APPLE with the well-known John Sykes. However, despite the fans’ hopes, due to differences of opinion among the members, John Sykes left the band and the dream ended, but Mike and Billy continued their relationship, and Derek and Tony, who knew each other well, joined. The January concert was well received, and developed into a world tour, which began in October in Europe and Asia, and this live performance in Japan was part of that tour. In the January concert, each member covered their own songs as well as famous rock and fusion instrumental songs by Jeff Beck and Billy Cobham, but this concert expanded on that even further. With the soundtrack from the movie Scarface playing as the opening SE, the concert began with a medley of DREAM THEATER’s big song A Change of Seasons and LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT’s Acid Rain. Each member immediately demonstrated their skills with a flawless and spectacular performance. Since there is no vocalist, the arrangement is instrumental, but the approach of developing the difficult, complex, and perfectly constructed DREAM THEATER songs with jams in between is very interesting. Billy Sheehan’s improvisation there is amazing. The same approach is taken in the big song Lines in the Sand by DREAM THEATER, which was played at the end of the main part. The third song was The Stranger from Tony MacAlpine’s 1986 masterpiece Edge of Insanity. Billy’s bass part, which he played on the album, was reproduced in the live performance, delighting long-time fans. After that, each member’s own songs and instrumental masterpieces are played with a tremendous number of hands, feet, and sounds, more complex and difficult than the original songs. Billy and Mike’s powerful rhythm section, who screw in any gap as if they are the main characters, are captivating everywhere. I think that Mike was the core of DREAM THEATER, and I can’t help but wish that the band with John Sykes had continued like this. For the encore, Billy and Mike performed the famous song Shy Boy, which was also performed by TALAS and David Lee Roth. In the middle part, Billy, Derek, and Tony performed amazing solos in that order, and the concert ended with a great excitement. The recording position this time was in the center of the second row on the first floor, and the sound was convincing, with a direct and vivid sound that mixed the sound coming from the PA and the live sound. Billy’s bass solo was so vivid that the low sound was picked up even to the sound of the drum skin placed next to the bass amp. The separation of each instrument was also perfect. The Tokyo performance the next day was scheduled to be filmed for a DVD release, and this is a must-have album for fans that captures the 100-minute live performance in Osaka, which can be said to be a prelude, with no shortcuts at all, in ultra-high sound quality that is second to none. A spectacular performance that anyone who likes technical rock can enjoy 100%. Live at Morinomiya Piloti Hall, Osaka, Japan 13th November 2012 ULTIMATE SOUND(from Original Masters) Disc 1 (58:25) 1.
