Description

The Rebels was supposed to be released in 1979 as a disguised band by Prince and his backing band at the time. It is said that all nine songs were recorded at Mountain Years Sound Studio in Colorado for 12 days from July 10th to 21st, 1979. The members other than Prince were Dez Dickerson on guitar, Andre Simone on bass, Gail Chapman on keyboards, Matt Fink on keyboards, and Bobby Z on drums. Matt Fink mentioned in an interview that Prince had said, “We’re going to Colorado and we’re going to make another album with you guys, and we’re going to use a different group name,” but Dez also said that it was more of an album to inspire the members than a real album. It was a very innovative plan for Prince to create a rival band like The Time that would later become The Time. It was also groundbreaking that Prince had the members write the songs and Prince just focused on playing. Dez wrote Too Long and Disco Away, and Dez also sang, and he also played a big role in creating the guitar instrumental Instrumental 1. The elements that make The Rebels seem like hard rock are in fact Dez. Andre does Thrill You Kill You and the bass-heavy instrumental Instrumental 2. This part also has a black contemporary feel. Gail Chapman, who exudes a new music vibe like Taeko Onuki, sings You, If I Love You Tonight, and The Loser (previously known as Turn Me On, but now officially called The Loser), all of which were composed by Prince. This time, the first nine songs have been remastered by DJ Foefur, recreating the order of the songs that would have been on the album. The second half is a digital copy of the CD that contained all of The Rebels’ recordings. In addition to the original recordings related to The Rebels, it also includes recordings from around 1979, Baby Baby Baby, a single acoustic cut of Prince singing about how things are getting worse and worse when you’re with him, and Nadera, the title of the song about the woman Prince was dating at the time. Plus a bonus, longest snippet of Prince’s ’81 song Hard To Get at 2:03 seconds (previously only about a minute long). This is the definitive release of The Rebels. 1.Thrill You Or Kill You 2.Disco Away 3.The Loser 4.If I Love You Tonight 5.Instrumental 2 6.You 7.Instrumental 1 8.Hard To Get 9.Too Long The Rebels DJ Foefur Remaster 10.You 11.Too Long 12.Hard To Get 13.Thrill You Or Kill You 14.Disco Away 15.Instrumental 16.Instrumental 17.If I Love You Tonight 18.The Loser 19.Baby, Baby, Baby 20.Nadara 21.K-Funk Interview From Original “Studio Session : The Rebels” CD 22.Hard To Get (1981 Version) 2:03
