Description
This title contains two shows that Prince guest-starred in 1983. First, there is a soundboard recording of James Brown and B.B. King’s live performances. The sound is good and you can enjoy a wonderful performance, but Michael Jackson and Prince were invited by JB to perform on this stage. James Brown later said, “Prince was playing the guitar at the time, but he was a little nervous. Michael has been studying me for many years, so it suited me. But I think Prince will really improve if he studies me like that from now on.” And this is an audience recording of Prince guest-starring at a live performance by Jah Wobble, the bass of Public Image Limited. Indeed, Prince’s commanding voice and “Cloreen Bacon Skin”-like sound are developed at the beginning of the song. Prince counts out and the performance begins, and Jah’s bass jumps in with an unexpectedly funky bass. Annie Whitehead’s trombone phrases are cool, and Neville’s percussion is reminiscent of Sheila E., but these two instruments were not used in Prince’s band at the time. The result is a performance that includes a unique Prince feel that can only be experienced here. James Brown & B.B. King – Beverly Theater, Los Angeles : 20th August 1983 (Soundboard Recording) 1.
