Description
Of the four UK concerts held in January 1970, the third was held at Fairfield Hall in Croydon, Surrey on January 18th. This is a must-listen take for fans, with all songs recorded in a high-quality audience recording over the course of 127 minutes, one of the longest at the time. There is a theory that “Atom Heart Mother” was first performed in public at the Yorkshire performance on the previous day, the 17th, but since there is no recording from that day to date, this Croydon performance recording is the oldest live recording of “Atom Heart Mother”. The Paris recording from January 23rd, which was recently unearthed and much talked about, is the second live performance from this performance, and as can be heard there, “Atom Heart Mother” is almost complete in terms of the basic track, except for the part that includes Nick’s drum solo in the latter half. Embryo was a short piece when it was performed at the BBC session in 1969, but here it is played for 11 minutes, and has changed into a grand piece with guitar solo and vibraphone solo in the middle. In the first half, in addition to an excerpt from the movie soundtrack “More”, Biding My Time, which was performed as Work in part of “The Man”, is played alone. Astronomy Domine is recorded at the end of disc 1, but it is speculated that it is actually the opening track of the concert. The beginning of disc 2 contains The Violent Sequence, which is said to be an outtake from the movie “Zabriskie Point” and lasts for 15 minutes. It is an experimental suite of three parts familiar from this period, starting with Heart Beat, Pig Meat with inorganic repetitive rhythms, followed by a fierce exchange between drum solo and piano in the middle, and ending with the original song of Us And Them, which will be recorded on “The Madness”, played on piano. The last is the 17-minute encore A Saucerful Of Secrets, where you can enjoy a spectacular performance filled with tension. Although there are many cuts between songs, the sound image itself is stable from beginning to end, and there is no problem of hiss noise, sound cracking or deterioration, so you can listen to it without any stress. Currently, there seem to be two reel tape copies branching off from the master, but this sound source is the RAW TRANSFER take of the copy from the master reel tape, which is said to be the youngest of the takes that have appeared in recent years and recorded this performance. If you listen to it, you will understand at a glance, but the sound of the clear sound without deterioration is wonderful, and probably, considering that 43 years have passed since the actual concert in 1970 Croydon, there will be no more takes in the future. It seems that meticulous and delicate restoration work has also been performed, and the stability of the sound image is amazing. The overall set composition is unknown, including the order of the songs recorded, due to the aforementioned cuts between songs, but this is the best album to listen to this wonderful historical take as it is, and it is definitely a must-listen and must-have 2-disc set for fans. The high pitch has been accurately corrected. Live at Fairfield Hall, Croydon, Surrey, UK 18th January 1970 TRULY AMAZING SOUND Disc 1 (52:12) 1. Careful With That Axe, Eugene 2. The Embryo 3.
