Description

Previously, a best compilation was released from Led Zeppelin’s 1973 US tour, but such a concept had never existed for Floyd. Since the group valued the total concept both on the album and on stage, even enthusiasts could not come up with such a compilation. However, last year, a taper calling himself “Jimfisheye” produced a groundbreaking compilation of Floyd’s live sound sources and released it online. This is the “Best Of North American Tour 1977” that will be released this time. It is a concept that has never been seen in Floyd before, but Jimfisheye’s decision to make what he calls “a definitive 1977 tour album” from the 1977 Animals US tour seems to be a very accurate decision. Although no soundboard recordings were excavated from this tour, there are many audience recordings with superb sound quality that make you want to call it “like a soundboard”. Also, the tour itself moved from Europe, where they had been performing neatly, to America, where each person’s playing and Roger’s singing often showed different expressions depending on the day, so there is no better time than this for Floyd’s first live tour compilation. All the original sound sources were carefully selected and used as the best versions. Moreover, using three discs, all the songs performed on the tour are covered in the order of the set list. First of all, the majority of the first disc is the eternal evergreen, Oakland. It is a sound source that represents the Animals tour so much that no explanation is needed, but since the recording started abruptly from the intro of “Sheep”, the state before the performance started is patched in Montreal on the last day of the tour. Of course, if the performance of one disc is filled with the take of Oakland, there is no point in making a compilation. So, on the first disc, on the other days, the guitar solo of “Pigs on the Wing (part 2)” appears. From here, we switch to Montreal. You can see the concept that Jimfisheye was aiming for in this editing. There was a part in the song in Oakland where Snowy White missed playing the solo (which was also the charm of this day), so they switched to the Montreal take to cover it up. In other words, like an official live album, they combined multiple takes to create a highly complete version. The first disc ends with Montreal, so it’s interesting to see the familiar Oakland Animals set close with the Montreal version of Roger’s screaming “Pigs”. The second disc mainly features the second day of MSG, which is a famous sound source that is said to be “the second set of the Animals tour”. However, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)” is finished in the best state that Jimfisheye aims for, quoting not only MSG but also Oakland and Fort Worth in May. If that’s the case, what would they do with the second half of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts VI-IX)”, which was cut, but they made up for it in Miami in April with a unique sense. And for the third disc, it was edited using the three major sound sources mentioned so far: Oakland, Montreal, and the second day of MSG. In particular, “Us & Them” is an intricately edited finish in Oakland and MSG, and “Blues”, which was the final performance on the final day of the tour, combines multiple sources in one performance. This shows that they tried to realistically reproduce the confusion of the other members and the audience at the blues jam played as an encore by Roger, who had just finished spitting on the audience and was completely out of it. Although it is a compilation compiled by Jimfisheye through such soulful editing, there are some rough spots such as “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” and “Blues” being recorded in a high pitch state. Both are famous one-off performances on tour, so it’s a shame that the pitch deviations were overlooked. Naturally, these problems have been properly adjusted. Of course, there are no new parts or improvements in sound quality, but rather the sound sources themselves are all famous audience recordings that have been perfected by Sirene and Sigma items. Nevertheless, the sound source selection and editing mentioned above are also excellent, and the overall finish is a masterpiece that can be enjoyed by beginners and enthusiasts alike, making it a truly Animals Tour Anthology! This set is assembled to be a definitive 1977 tour album with some of the best performances from the North American 1977 tour featuring consistent high fidelity and discreet surround sound as heard at the original shows…(TRULY PERFECT/ULTIMATE SOUND) Disc 1 (54:31) 1.
