Description

The “REMASTER & REMIX” project using the latest AI technology has been creating a whirlwind with the shocking works of Oasis and Jimi Hendrix. The PINK FLOYD edition has finally begun! The first release is the iconic live album of the “DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Tour” which will be released on a big 4CD set. This work is “March 14, 1973 Boston performance”. This is a 4CD set that includes two updated versions of the super famous recording that was said to be the “best masterpiece of 1973”. If you have read this article, there is no need to say much about this famous recording. It is an audience recording recorded by the historic taper “Joe Maloney”, and in 1973, when there were few recordings, it is a recording of a champion that boasted exceptional sound quality. It is a literal cultural heritage that conveys the moment of the peak two weeks after the release of “The Dark Side of the Moon”. The pinnacle of this was the masterpiece “DEFINITIVE BOSTON 1973: JOE MALONEY MASTER”, but this work is a new era version that progresses the original master with the latest AI technology! In addition, what I want to emphasize here is that “AI is not generating sounds that are not recorded in the original sound source”. Please note that so-called general generation AI and AI technology used in music editing are different. If you have experienced Oasis and Jimi Hendrix’s works, you may have already made up your mind, but this time it is the first installment of PINK FLOYD. For those who have not experienced it, let’s start from scratch. As mentioned above, this work is an upgrade of one traditional recording using two methods. Let’s introduce each one individually. DISC 1-2: Authentic mono version with increased solidity The two version differences are roughly speaking the “mono version” and the “stereo version”. To begin with, this recording was “mono recorded on stereo tape”. It was a common recording method at the time, and the same sound was recorded on the left and right channels. After that, there was a degree of deterioration between the left and right, a phase shift, etc., and there was a CD that recorded it in stereo, but essentially and musically it is “mono”. DISC 1-2 of this work respects the original characteristics of such recording. On top of that, it has been evolved to the maximum extent possible with the latest AI technology. How has such a “mono audience recording” evolved? Simply put, it has become “clearer” and “more dynamic”. First of all, “clearer”, the most obvious point is hiss noise. Various noise reduction methods have been developed in each era, but the processing method in the AI era is revolutionary. When it comes to AI technology, you may have heard of “demix”, which breaks down each instrument, but this is the opposite of “mix”, which layers sounds. For example, it is a technology that can extract only vocals or only guitar tracks from a finished CD. In the latest AI mastering, this is also used for noise. Previous noise reduction methods have been obsessed with the performance sound, but in this work, only the noise is beautifully removed without any obsession at all. And “dynamicization”. The sound has evolved to a heavy and rich sound, so much so that even the former peak album “DEFINITIVE BOSTON 1973” feels thin. Please do not misunderstand that this is not “bulking” like conventional digital mastering. There is no distortion or deformation, and the performance sound of the time is reproduced in a wide range with a natural feeling. The thickness of the bass, which was thin due to the limit of analog tape, the density of the mid-range that you can feel the touch, and the resolution of the high range that extends beautifully… everything is amazing. Please listen especially to Richard Wright’s synth. The tapestry of sound, which was the most advanced in the world at that time, feels revived to a single thread… no, even a single fiber. Even though nothing is done, you will have the illusion that your whole body is wrapped in a blanket of delicate and vivid sound. DISC 3-4: The world’s first stereo version that has evolved into a whole new dimension Just the mono version is an unknown musical experience, but the “stereo version” recorded on DISC 3-4 is even more impactful. This is completely different from conventional pseudo-stereo in terms of fundamental principles. Conventional pseudo-stereo creates a sense of spaciousness by applying different effects to the left and right channels or by subtly shifting them. In contrast, AI creates “real stereo”. Here too, the important thing is “demixing”. Each instrument can be disassembled, and the separated tracks are reassembled in stereo. In other words, this is the same principle as a normal stereo sound source assembled from multi-tracks. With the latest AI technology, even if the sound source is an audience recording that does not have the frequency bands and channels of instruments and vocals neatly separated like a soundboard sound source, it is possible to separate and output “stems” (each instrument, vocal, drum part, etc. cut out for each individual track). If those stems are properly arranged, it is literally possible to reproduce the sound image of a perfect stereo mix. And the most important thing is the sound world of this work that blows away such logic. It is completely different from the pseudo-stereo, which unnaturally widens the width and blurs the wider it gets. You can feel the position of each instrument and each member. Even though the space is wide, there is no blurring at all, and the three-dimensional separation means that the sounds do not mix no matter how much they overlap. Rick’s keyboard, with its flying sounds, is amazing here, but Nick Mason’s drums are even more striking. Not only is the position of the drums separated from the other instruments clearly established, but you can even feel the structure of the kit. Of course, if it were mixed randomly, it would feel strange like an imaginary instrument, but there is no need to worry about that with this album. It is a live album that sounds like it was recorded in stereo from the beginning with a natural balance. The latest AI technology is the key point, so it has become a very theoretical story, but the most important thing about this album is that you listen to it and immediately think, “Wow!” and “It’s fun!”. It’s the “charm of music” without any logic. In the world of music archives, the use of the latest AI technology is not uncommon, as it is new, difficult to use, or uses old plug-ins, which can actually cause discomfort. However, our “REMASTER & REMIX” project is different. We have been pursuing the strengths of AI mastering, the latest technology that is constantly evolving, and the flavor of vintage sound sources, and have been thoroughly familiar with them to bring out the “charm of music”. The first release from this new project by PINK FLOYD. This is “vintage music of a new era”. This is a superb audience recording of the “Boston performance on March 14, 1973”. This is a new masterpiece that has evolved Joe Maloney’s legendary recording, also known as “the masterpiece of 1973”, with the latest AI remastering and remixing. This is a four-disc set that includes the “mono version (DISC 1-2)”, which has a heavy finish while making use of the flavor of the original recording, and the world’s first “stereo version (DISC 3-4)”. This is the first release from PINK FLOYD’s “REMASTER & REMIX” project, which embodies a new era of vintage music.
