Description

The special feeling that is unique to that performance in that year. That can be said for any band, but in particular, Pink Floyd’s “Madness / Early Edition Complete Reproduction” is one of the best sound sources that everyone agrees with in its special feeling, isn’t it? As you know, the reason for this is that “Money” and “Us And Them” on this day were performed with a saxophone player, the only performance in 1972 (※ The fact that this performance was a charity show for “Benefit for War on Want” was also a factor in changing the performance). It is a performance that can be said to be the basis of the development type in the later album completion form and live performance, and it is also one of the top-class sound sources in terms of musical importance in the first place, among all of Floyd’s 1972 performances, so I think that the desire to always be in the best sound image is something that any Floyd fan of the sound source wants. The sound source of this day was once a rare sound source that could only be heard on “THE OXFAM CONCERT” released overseas. However, the sound quality was poor with irreparable hiss noise in many places, and I think there are quite a few fans who have bitter memories of listening to it at the time. However, three years ago in July 2014, “WEMBLEY 1972 2ND NIGHT” was released using the master clone of this original recording, and the sound source history of this performance was dramatically updated with its high-quality sound without any noise. The impact was not only here in Japan, but also worldwide, where many overseas fans who ordered by mail at the time praised it. However, this year in 2017, a huge shock ran through this. An astonishing low-generation tape was discovered that surpasses the sound of “WEMBLEY 1972 2ND NIGHT” (hereinafter referred to as “already released”). The sound can be described in one word as “unexperienced master grade feeling”, and that’s it. It is clear when comparing the two sound sources, but the newly discovered source has improved sound clarity, density, and focus of the sound image compared to the previously released version, so that even a beginner can tell, and the difference is so great that it gives the impression that the amount of recorded information is fundamentally different. You may wonder, “Is it possible for the sound to be better than the previously released version that was a master clone?” However, even if it is a master clone, it will not be converted with good sound unless you understand the characteristics of the original tape and the deck. If you have ever recorded LPs to tape or dubbed tapes together, you may have experienced this at least once, but even if the original sound is good, when you listen to the recorded tape, the recorded sound will often be recorded with a different character, the dynamic range (the difference between the loudest and quietest sounds) will feel narrow, and the sounds in the depths will be thin and weak. This is mainly due to the deck not being adjusted or biased to bring out the characteristics of the tape used, and transferring analog sound without understanding this will not produce good results. The previously released version is indeed a master cloned tape, but when listening to this latest source, it seems that the adjustment of the deck to match the tape was not considered when creating the clone, and although the basic sound is of course good, it sounds like “I just made a copy of the master tape for now”. However, the newly discovered low-gene tape has a hint that the taper was converted by firmly grasping the meter value of the deck used, that is, the gain and fader levels, when it was transferred from the master tape to analog, and it was a sound that could easily be understood that the good sound quality of the master tape was inherited in the best condition. This latest Sigma work that will be released this time is a digital transfer that directly absorbs the sound from the newly discovered tape full of wonderful original sound power, and it is an upper version full of the realism of the sound of the original master tape. Another topic is that the sound quality recorded was so good that almost nothing was done except for the correction of pitch fluctuation, and it is the latest work that allows you to enjoy the fine molded original sound recorded on the tape in detail! Such original sound power drifts immediately after the start of Disc-1. You will notice that the sound with a good visibility and rich density fills the hall, and at the same time, you will notice that the previously released sound was somewhat cloudy and light. The sound image of “Breathe” is about +2 brighter and more refreshing, and “On The Run”, which had a slightly crushed sound on the previously released version, has become more accurate so that you can follow the details, and you will be surprised by the sound image with the original color and swell of the sound. From around 4 minutes 50 seconds in the latter half to the beginning of “Time” 00 minutes 13 seconds, there are some parts of the tape that have deteriorated, just like the previously released version, but surprisingly, it has a smoother and more glossy listening experience than the previously released version of the same scene that has been remastered, and it is an interesting topic that you can feel the superiority of the original sound. In the early “The Great Gig…”, the impressive rising tone pattern repeated many times in the middle of the song and the dense tapestry of the organ part that follows come out with a more realistic sound with a more solid feeling, and the highlights, “Money” and “Us And Them”, are also fascinating sounds with true resonance, and you will be captivated by the power of the massive and sharp midrange. In particular, the sound image here suggests that the MOL value of the original tape (※ how much volume can be recorded in the audible range where distortion is not noticeable) was probably brought out on the deck side, and you will be excited by the clear punch and transparent sound that is more accurate than the previously released version. In particular, “Us And Them” has a high density of the organ introductory part, and the brightness and depth of the guitar arpeggios are greatly increased. The glossy tone fills the sound field from around 2 minutes 55 seconds when the saxophone enters, which is very striking, allowing for advanced consideration of what effect the saxophone had on the early performance of the song. Furthermore, the powerful and unrestrained depiction of “Any Colour You Like”, which is unique to the early take, reaches the ears in the best form in the history of sound sources, and the final scene of this day, where the laughter SE and the sound of the bell overlap at the end of “Eclipse”, is more documentary-like than the already released version, leaving a truly vivid aftertaste. Even when the second part begins, the upper feeling does not stop. The first half of this day’s “One Of These Days”, which progresses with an unusually heavy image, has increased accuracy and sound visibility in the mid-range, and the contrast with the second half, which violently drives the feeling of driving, is revived with an even more satisfying sound image. The floating feeling in the middle part of the song also makes the sound expression transform vividly in your ears, and the eerie sound that the original sound originally had jumps out with a vividness that exceeds that of the previous release. “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” is attractive because of the sound that comes straight without distortion or coloring, and I think you will experience the size of the original sound here as well. There is also the joy of being able to clearly see the axis of the song in the floating feeling, and you will surely be able to savor the joy of being swallowed up by the sound that stirred the era. In “Echoes”, I would like you to pay attention once again to the dramatically improved outlook of the overall sound. Here, the sound image becomes more and more refined, and the sharp sound perspective = the sense of scale that is absolutely essential to this song is reproduced with the most dazzling vividness in the history of the source. The same can be said for “Set The Controls…”, where the transformation of the sound pattern moving in the dull sound = change in expression is becoming easier to grasp, but it is surprising that even such a monotonous song can sense the improvement in sound. Naturally, the storm of noise that was prominent in the old Godfather board has completely disappeared, and the raw sound that remained shining until the end of “Blues” is a pleasure to listen to until the end. I would like to make one thing clear, but just because this work has been released does not mean that the sound of the already released Sigma-115 version was bad at all. As I wrote in the web commentary at the time, it is also a great sound. However, when you actually listen to the sound, you will be surprised at the considerable difference in the amount of information you can receive, and you will be reminded that this difference in the amount of information of the sound is an absolutely essential element in understanding music that pursues sound like Floyd. Some people may be put off by the term “upper edition,” but I would like to draw your attention to the fact that there are so many updated topics to write about in terms of sound quality, even though it is the same source as the previously released version, and this latest work is sure to raise the listener’s aural evaluation. This outstanding reproduction of the original sound waveform will surely make you tremble with joy at being able to get as close as possible to this special performance, the only one in 1972.
