Description

From the second tour of Japan in 1972, the Kyoto Prefectural Gymnasium on March 10th was recorded in full with high quality audience recording. This is a DAT copy from the original master cassette (National 120-minute tape), which has appeared for the first time in recent years. The gene is obviously younger than the already released “Home Again”, and the quality is very good and the whole show is recorded with a stable sound image. The original sound is a little small and the feel is soft, but the sound quality itself is clear, and it is a famous recording take that conveys the groove of the band. We also obtained the DAT tape itself, which is said to be “1st Gen”, at the same time in recent years, but this take contains longer cheers than that take, and the sound quality of this take also felt unprocessed, so as a result of analysis, this take was adopted. There are traces of recording pauses between the last three songs, perhaps due to concern about the remaining tape, but as a result of using each side of the 120-minute tape thoroughly, there are no gaps in the songs, making it a very excellent record. Overall, the sound image is rather modest, so it is not recommended for beginners, but the performance itself is captured with a fresh, very excellent sound, so the overall response is also wonderful. The attractive sound of the vocals, guitar, and piano, which give a sense of mysterious color, is truly indescribable. It is surprising that there is so little hiss noise even though no hiss reduction was applied. Anyway, it has never been possible to listen to Kyoto 1972 with “decent sound”, so this can be said to be the biggest event of the year. Perhaps it was fortunate that the venue, the Kyoto Prefectural Gymnasium, was not particularly large, or perhaps Floyd’s side was influenced by the culture and atmosphere of Kyoto, but the performance is characterized by an unusually calm, truly mysterious performance. Rick’s organ sound is particularly impressive, and the way it envelops the entire venue in combination with the chorus is a masterpiece. Fans will surely realize once again how excellent the 1972 Kyoto live performance was by listening to it for the first time with good quality sound. As a 1972 Floyd audience recording, it is average from a global perspective, but the extraordinary stability of the recording (almost no cheers can be heard) and the creative performance with the continued tension on the Floyd side are particularly noteworthy. In particular, the “Madness” on this day is a truly wonderful performance that lives up to the name of a masterpiece. Unless a Diffmaster appears on the 1972 Kyoto performance sound source, there will never be anything better than this in the future. After 41 years, the definitive “Kyoto 1972” has finally appeared.
