Description
“LIVE AT POMPEII” is all too familiar to rock fans. The legendary 4-channel mix of the soundtrack for the theatrical version of the film, which was released in theaters in the mid-1970s and was only used in a very limited number of theaters in the United States, is recorded on two discs, one for the front speakers and one for the rear speakers. The first disc contains the sound for the front speakers, and the second disc contains the sound for the rear speakers. The original sound source was extracted from a 35mm Cinemascope 4-track magnetic soundtrack mixed in a 4-channel system, and since it is divided into front and rear here, each has its own unique mix. The first disc gives the impression that the sounds of each instrument can be heard evenly, and it feels like an orthodox mix that can be listened to normally even on its own, but the second disc has an unusual mix balance throughout, which is the point of this title. The second disc is a very sparse mix, perhaps because it is balanced to supplement the front speakers overall, and when listened to alone, you can hear a very unbalanced and interesting mix. The drums and bass are weak, but the guitar is recorded on a large scale, and the characteristic mix of the guitar running around freely in all directions, which can be heard on the pressing itself, sounds even more prominent here, and the guitar just goes back and forth from beginning to end, which may give you a strange feeling of sneaking a peek at the original source of the 4-channel mix. Each of these separate mixes can only be heard on this board, and there is no doubt that they are very interesting and highly documented items. (About the origin of the sound source) This 4-channel mix was created around 1974 by Adrian Marven, the director of “Pompeii,” and was requested to be mixed by recording engineer Dan Wallin (famous for the movie “Woodstock” etc.), and after mixing at A&M studio, it was copied using the Todd AO method and released to the public only in a very small number of theaters in New York and Los Angeles that supported 4-channel mixes. However, since then, it has never seen the light of day and has been completely forgotten (there are even rumors that the members of Floyd themselves were unaware of the existence of this 4ch…), but in recent years, a fan of this film, noticing that the 1974 theatrical release version had not been released on DVD in the correct form (as fans know, the current official DVD has been heavily edited), attempted to restore the 1974 version using a past release version. Then, after a while, in an online fan community, it was revealed that the phantom 4-channel mix had been extracted from a real 35mm film that had not seen the light of day since its theatrical release in the mid-1970s and was distributed to a very small number of people. This time, the front and rear CD masters that were distributed were directly recorded. The audio was taken from a 35mm Cinemascope 4-track magnetic striped print of Live at Pompeii featuring the quadraphonic mix Disc 1(64:05) Quad Mix For Front Speakers 1. Intro 2. Echoes, Part 1 3.
