Description
From the second North American tour in 1972, San Francisco on September 24th was the first complete recording of the second day of the Winterland performance, lasting about 1 hour and 46 minutes. This is the first full-length album including the 13-minute encore Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, which has never seen the light of day. It is 15 minutes longer than the longest take that has already been released, and the content and sound quality are far superior to “Winterland 1972” and even “Dark Side Of The West”, which was released as an upper version of it. The previously released Speak To Me of “The Dark Side Of The Moon” started with an SE cut-in, but this edition is recorded from before the start. This part alone is recorded 30 seconds longer than the two previously released versions. The beginning of the second part, One Of These Days, is similar, and although it starts with a cut-in of the wind SE like the previous episodes, it is actually recorded for nearly 5 seconds longer. The previously released Echoes fades out immediately after the performance, but this edition includes nearly 1 minute and 50 seconds of sound check sound between songs. And since the first appearance of 13 minutes and 12 seconds Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun is recorded as it is, the content greatly exceeds the previous release in all respects. This can be called a big event for avid Floyd collectors! Also noteworthy is the intro to Echoes. A drawback of this sound source is the cut at the beginning of Echoes, but the main version has a tape change (flip?) cut after “This is called “Echoes””, but the recovery has already been done. For the first time, the intro’s beeping organ sound effect is included. Naturally, the difference in sound quality is obvious, and when you listen to “Winterland 1972” on its own, the sound quality is high enough, but Gene is clearly younger this time, and the sound is more natural and clear than the previous releases. Compared to this version, the previous version feels artificially equalized and the sound is muddy. The sound is obviously more natural this time, and you can enjoy the whole show with the fresh sound of the master itself. Even if I’m listening to it now, I wonder if there was ever a high-quality sound source from the 1972 North American tour? The sound quality is astounding. The sound output in the high and low ranges is second to none, and the sense of stability is outstanding. The sense of separation, the clarity of each part, and the punch of the sound are all at an indescribable level. The only sound sources for the second North American tour are Dallas on September 10th, the famous Hollywood Bowl on the 22nd, and an incomplete recording of the first day of Winterland on the 23rd, so this time. The appearance of the complete version on the second day of Winterland can be said to be a very important release (this take is the only one in which Speak To Me of the North American tour is completely recorded from the beginning). The reaction of the audience who is making a fuss about the new song is also vivid, but Floyd’s performance at this time, which does not ignore it, is truly a masterpiece. You can hear a truly tight performance that has good speed and control throughout, and a sustained sense of tension. In 2013, the master edition of the second day of the 1972 Winterland performance finally appeared. This is a definitive album that is sure to become one of this year’s representative albums.
