Description

Just as Hampton brings to mind the Rolling Stones’ 1981 concert, Oakland brings to mind Pink Floyd in 1977 (though some may say the Stones in 1969). In addition, both Hampton and Oakland have in common the fact that they are famous recordings of the first day of a two-day concert in the same place. Therefore, Floyd’s Oakland refers to the sound source that captured the performance on May 9, 1977 with perfect sound quality. This is obvious. Now that 40 years have passed since that performance, the sound quality is amazing and has not faded at all when listening to it again. Not only in 1977, but also among the best audience recordings of the stage of a British band that landed in the United States in the 1970s. Perfect sound quality with a powerful sound image and clarity that even the word “on” seems lukewarm. Combined with the benefit of the era when the performance of portable recording equipment began to improve in earnest, this is the ultimate sound source whose impact on sound quality and even the impact of the performance content has not faded. That is why this sound source has produced many masterpieces so far. Let’s take a quick look back. “IN THE FLESH” is a representative Oakland title of the 90s, released by the ancient famous label GREAT DANE. “MR. PIG” is a masterpiece by the HIGHLAND label that has become the standard Oakland of the 21st century. This is the first time that a low-generation sound source has been made into a CD. Incidentally, the inner jacket of the later “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT” was a homage to the design of this title. “OAKLANDS” The release from SIRENE was also based on a low-generation sound source, but criticism was received immediately after it was released regarding equalization. However, it was significant that it was the only title recorded on the second day of Oakland on a press CD until now. “OAKLAND” In response to criticism of the above title, this is a single release of the first day of Oakland, recorded in a more natural state. “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND” In 2009, a sound source was released that was copied from the master cassette to a reel that was rich in information and less degraded by dubbing. Based on that, the pitch deviation and cut parts were repaired, and it became a long-selling version as a literally definitive version of Oakland in 1977. However, in 2015, a version was finally released in which the master cassette of Oakland was digitally transferred with the latest equipment at 24bit/96khz high quality without any degradation. The ultimate audience recording recorded by a person named Reinhart Holhwein was finally sealed in the ultimate form. A limited press CD title based on it was also released in 2015 as SIGMA’s “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT”. The release of the upper version, which even blew away the definitive feeling of “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND”, which had been considered the definitive version of Oakland until then, shocked enthusiasts all over the world. The best version of Oakland, Floyd’s evergreen live sound source, has appeared. The impact was so great that at the same time, the vividness that could be understood at a glance overwhelmed the listener. This is the master cassette, which could only be reproduced, and the outline of the performance was further highlighted with clear clarity, and above all, the reproduction ability of all ranges was clearly superior to past sound sources, which also made me realize that it was a master. Therefore, unlike the release of “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND”, the release of “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT” in 2015 was not only a long-selling product, but also sold out in an instant, and once again made me keenly aware of Oakland’s unwavering popularity. The problem is that this evergreen sound source, Oakland, has become difficult to obtain. As mentioned earlier, there was no continuous distribution for a certain period of time like “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND”, so there was a constant demand for a re-release of “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT” immediately after it sold out. This is only natural, considering that it is the highest peak among the many Floyd audience recordings, and even the best sound source of the tour accompanying the 1977 album “ANIMALS”. In other words, “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT” was the best Oakland in 1977. In that case, there is no need to look for a new version of the sound source recorded by Reinhart Holhwein, and it is natural that the reissue of “OAKLAND 1977 1ST NIGHT” is the best Oakland item. To all the enthusiasts who have been waiting for the re-release for two years, we apologize for the long wait. Not only is it the ultimate sound quality, but the performance content is also superb. Since the 1977 tour moved to North America, the performances have only become stronger and heavier. The fact that the venue was a stadium is a major factor. After being bothered by the noisy audience every day at Madison Square Garden in July, Roger Waters reached a breaking point in Montreal. In that respect, Oakland is also valuable in that it recorded the period when the increase in heaviness was at its best during the North American tour with the best sound quality. For example, the aggressive bass play by Snowy White before the interlude of “Pigs (Three Different Ones)” is a prime example. This thrilling moment is captured with the best sound quality. On the other hand, the way that the North American tour handled the incident, where Gilmore bursts out in “Have a Cigar” and Roger misses his vocals, and then takes a break before starting again, is unique to this period when the North American tour was on track. Also, before “Wish You Were Here” started, when Roger tuned the radio, the intro of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by the Rolling Stones happened to play in the venue, which was also unique to this day. And speaking of Oakland, the best scene was “Careful with That Axe, Eugene” during the encore, which was the first performance since 1973. The fact that such a surprise occurred was a sign of their ease, and at the same time, the fact that such a free scene was seen even on the 1977 tour, which gave a very systematic impression, was a groundbreaking point for Oakland. What’s more, it was captured with the finest sound quality, which is even more so. The reissue of the title that contains the best version of the 1977 live recording, both in sound quality and performance content, will finally be realized. And the title of this 2017 release of Oakland is simply “DEFINITIVE OAKLAND 1977”, which is fitting for a definitive edition! Don’t miss it this time! Live at Alameda Coliseum, Oakland, CA.
