Description

The 1971 Santa Monica sound source reached its peak with “SANTA MONICA 1971”, but the newly discovered reel tape that suddenly appeared on eBay was not in the best condition from the beginning. Although it was originally in stereo format, cuts and noise were found in several places, and above all, the serious deterioration that had occurred in the left channel was even fatal. It is thought that the cause of this left channel deterioration may have been a misalignment of the magnetic stripe on the original recording tape recorded at the scene on that day, but on the other hand, it could also be due to a defective azimuth on the playback deck or an incorrect equalizer. This situation can occur even when there is a setting, and it is not possible to clearly determine when and at what point this happened. In addition, we were able to confirm that there were editing marks left on the tape, such as “Blues” not being in the original position, and a large amount of empty space remaining on the tape. It has also been discovered that this is not the original recorded tape, but rather a 1st gen or later source created by reel-to-reel. …However, it is also true that listening to the unprocessed state that remains on this reel is a great clue to understanding more deeply the sound image of the right channel, which remains a gem of a sound. . For example, “Fat Old Sun” is recorded separately in the original condition of the eBay reel, and is divided into (part 1) and (part 2), and at the end of part 2, the recording is interrupted due to a tape change or a pause press. You can confirm that it is interrupted. Also, interestingly, this eBay reel has noticeable chatter and small noises in several places only in “The Embryo” that are not noticeable in other songs. Of course, these are significantly reduced or removed during remastering, but both cases can be said to be easy-to-understand examples of how the original sound was before the sound image was modified. However, despite the fact that the original sound has been chopped up in this way and the left channel has deteriorated, it is amazing to see that the height of musical creativity that Floyd unleashed on that day has not been lost in the slightest. You will be surprised, and you will also be very impressed by the fact that the missing scenes and difficult points in the sound image have been completely repaired using modern technology, and the music has been raised to a level that is not inferior at all. What makes this disc so interesting is that you can see the before and after scenes of difficult scenes. And as for the sound image, the left channel finally returns completely at 2:02 of “Cymbaline”. The sound image recovery is too slow, but this eBay reel has finally regained its original sound and is now demonstrating its super-class sound potential for the first time. Its amazing resolution and vivid sound pressure feel… This can only be experienced with the actual sound, but it is not a sound image that distributes the sound of the right channel to the left, but the sound that is picked up from each microphone. It is a privilege only for those who have this disc in their hands to be able to enjoy the true impact and lingering sound that comes out of both channels. And because “Blues” takes over the complete recovery of the sound image, it really feels really sad that it cuts out after only about 2 minutes. Fortunately, the right channel remained in excellent condition, so this is a newly discovered eBay reel that has been converted to a higher level that will still be valuable even after the next 10 years. It is no exaggeration to say that now that it has been remastered and has even been created as the strongest source of iron-clad material that has been matrixed with AUD recording, there will never be another chance for a disc containing this rough sound to be made into a disc.
