Description

This is a must-listen, must-have, must-have item for fans, as it is the first complete broadcast recording of the performance in La Lane, Netherlands, from the European tour with the European Rhythm Machine in 1969. Toots Thielemans appears as a guest. The masterpiece “La Lane 1969”, released about 15 years ago and beloved by fans, has recently been released as a complete version including a song in which Toots Thielemans appeared as a guest on the day and showed off his swinging harmonica and gorgeous guitar playing (!). The live performance, in which Woods gave up on jazz in America and selected European masters as his backing, was the most energetic period of his life, in his late 30s. The song performed was the classic “Freedom Dance”, composed by Eddie Harris in 1965 and covered by many jazz musicians, including Miles Davis, and it is exceptionally cool. What is even more surprising is the quality of the sound. The album has been remastered in 24-bit and hiss has been removed to the maximum extent possible, so you can enjoy a sound image that is hard to believe was recorded half a century ago. What’s more, it was a bolt from the blue to discover that Toots Thielemans’ guitar playing was so good. Phil Woods’ alto and Gordon Beck’s piano make this album full of excitement.
