Description

White blues legend Peter Green broke his silence for more than 10 years and made a comeback in 1996. “Cozy Tape” recorded by his newly formed SPLINTER GROUP. SPLINTER GROUP is Peter’s restarted band, but it is not just a backup band. With Nigel Watson (also brother-in-law of FLEETWOOD MAC’s manager Clifford Davis), who also participated in his early solo singles “Heavy Heart” and “Beasts of Burden,” he supported the heroes Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, and QUEEN. However, it is a super band that brings together great artists such as the famous Spike Edney. They all also participated in Peter’s comeback work “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, but this work is a rehearsal album recorded in the early sessions. What’s more, the quality is top-notch with a “super” rating. It has been made into a CD directly from the cassettes left behind by Koji, who has produced many masterpieces, and it is by far the highest quality among that legendary collection. Even with Cozy Tape, some of the rehearsal material was recorded on a cassette deck placed in the studio, but this work is different. Strictly speaking, only the vocals feel a little distant, but the instruments are a stereo sound board. It is also a completely official quality and extremely beautiful, and each note of each master flows into your ears. Rehearsal albums usually have the feeling of being in a closed room, like “sitting together in the studio” or “the members are right in front of you,” but this album transcends that dimension and gives you a synchronized feeling that makes you feel like the band is sitting in your head. It approaches. And the blues drawn with such a sound is just so delicious. Since this is just a rehearsal, the mood is relaxed, but it doesn’t feel like practice or tuning, but rather a group of historical masterpieces that are already familiar to the mind and body, and are played to the heart’s content. Now let’s organize that set as well. Original (3 songs)・FLEETWOOD MAC: Black Magic Woman/Albatross・DESTINY ROAD: Indians Covers and others (5 songs)・It Takes Time (Odis Rush)/Dark End Of The Street (James Carr)/From 4 ’till Late (Robert Johnson) / Steady Rollin’ Man (Robert Johnson) / The Stumble (Freddie King) and others: Blues / Ain’t Nobody … and so on. The cover group is the blues standard that could be heard in the debut work “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, but I’m glad that they also play FLEETWOOD MAC’s “Black Magic Woman” and “Albatross”. “Indians” is an original penned by Nigel, and it is a number that was not only included in the later “DESTINY ROAD” but also became part of the repertoire at early live performances. And the performance that spells out such famous songs is just wonderful. Immediately after rehearsals started, there was a feeling of fumbling around, as if searching for the sweet spot, but as each song played, the excitement grew and the singing voices became more powerful. Peter has revived the unique tone that any white bluesman would aspire to, and his small phrases sound delicately and his long lines sound glossy. The SPLINTER GROUP that backs them up is also impregnable. What is especially wonderful is Cozy. Although he is a power hitter who is extremely popular with HR fans, his true value lies in the breathability of his ensemble. He listens closely to the other parts, and by adding a little bit of fun to each part, he motivates the members. Such a style makes HR with a neat composition such as RAINBOW or BLACK SABBATH dramatic, but in the case of blues it becomes “easy to get along with” and “friendly.” What’s more, when Cozy joins SPLINTER GROUP, he adapts to Peter’s world, even sealing off his signature double bass. The hard, clear sound and the many silly sounds are a cozy mark, but it is also a session album with a really delicious blues feel. Looking back, Koji always liked the return of heroes. Jeff Beck has returned from a car accident, Ritchie Blackmore and Michael Schenker have tried to stand on their own, WHITESNAKE and BLACK SABBATH have been disbanded due to business troubles, EL&POWELL is making a comeback, and they are trying to recover from Freddie’s tragedy. Brian May… Koji encouraged these heroes by his side and pushed them to the front lines. And SPLINTER GROUP revived the legend of white blues. This work is a superb studio album that allows you to witness such a scene. Of course, even if such circumstances are ignored, this work is a wonderfully realistic piece of music. It is a delicious piece that can be listened to as a prototype of the debut work “PETER GREEN SPLINTER GROUP”, or as an expanded version that includes FLEETWOOD MAC numbers. The “extreme” tasteful white blues revived in the 90’s. This time, it has been newly digitized from Cozy Tape. (The sound quality of the previous release was reduced due to equalization. This version has a natural and fuller sound.)
