Peter Frampton recently (October 12th) completed the final performance of his farewell tour after suffering from the incurable disease inclusion body myositis. This week marks a major milestone for the British rock guitar legend, with the release of a superb soundboard album that symbolizes 45 years ago when Frampton was climbing the ladder of success. This work includes “May 7, 1974 Hempstead Performance”. This is a stereo soundboard recording at “Ultrasonic Studio” where numerous musicians such as Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, LITTLE FEAT, THE DOOBIE BROTHERS left legendary records. Speaking of Frampton at the time, it had been about two months since the release of his third album “SOMETHIN’S HAPPENING”. It was the timing when “FRAMPTON” and “FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE!” started to make a big leap forward. This work, which records that show, is the finest stereo soundboard. You can’t expect a sense of scale like the historical masterpiece “FRAMPTON COMES ALIVE!”, but instead it has a vivid direct feeling that seems to be directly connected to the mix table. The solid guitar and singing voice penetrates into your brain with its core exposed, and you can hear live music playing inside your head. Of course, the rhythm section and keyboard are neatly separated, and the ensemble is three-dimensional. It is the highest quality for an FM sound board from the 70’s. The show drawn with such a sound is a hot show that is similar to “COMES ALIVE!” but different. First of all, regarding the members, the drummer is John Siomos, the same as “COMES ALIVE!”, the bassist is Rick Willis, who later joined FOREIGNER, and the keyboardist is Mickey Gallagher, who is known for his collaborations with Ian Dury and THE ANIMALS. In other words, this is the lineup of “FRAMPTON’S CAMEL”. The prototype of “COMES ALIVE!” has already been completed, including HUMBLE PIE’s “Shine On”, but on top of that, “The Lodger” and “White Sugar”, which could not be heard on the traditional masterpiece, will also be performed. And their performance is extremely passionate. “COMES ALIVE!” is a magnificent live album that saw “FRAMPTON” enter the top 40, but this work was at the stage where they were steadily cultivating a fan base while believing in their own music. Even though he felt he was responding to the excitement in front of him, he continued to challenge himself almost every night to seize the opportunity for a breakthrough. A passion similar to that dryness dwells in both the singing voice and the guitar, and the rock music burns fiercely. Even the Stones’ “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” is beaten with a 10-minute or more passionate performance that surpasses “COMES ALIVE!”. Peter Frampton in 1974 was running towards “COMES ALIVE!”, which went beyond a mere breakthrough and became a monumental live album. It is also a masterpiece of a live album where you can enjoy even harsher live performances on the finest stereo soundboard. Frampton, who was affected by illness, ended his road life, but it is precisely because of this now that the performance from when he was running with all his might is hot in my heart. It’s good to listen to “COMES ALIVE!” again, but this work is comparable to that famous album, and is one that responds to “more!”.
