Description

As Paul ages, he continues to be active as if he has reached the end of his career. In addition to touring every year, he is also re-releasing his past albums with unreleased audio and footage. Regarding the Wings era in particular, the 1976 world tour period tends to attract attention because of the abundance of material, but the Wings before that have tended to be neglected due to the lack of materials and materials. The 1970s was a turning point in which rock entered a new realm, with artists such as Floyd and Zeppelin performing avant-garde performances that made full use of stage visual effects and improvisation. It must have been a big change in the times for Paul, who had previously performed about 10 short songs and 30-minute stages during his time with the Beatles. It is true that the band is made up of unknown musicians, and the keyboard players are amateurs with no prior musical experience. As the curtain rose smoothly on stage with the host’s announcement, you could feel that even Paul was not able to keep up with the trends of the times. Blues, which had an influence on the rock world from the late 1960s, was the basis of each musical style, but within a short period of time, audience tastes shifted to hard rock. It was probably because of such changes in fashion that Wings finally caught up with the times after the guitarist changed from Henry to Jimmy. As if left behind by such changes in the times, Wings’ stage performance in 1972 had a strong blues flavor. Fans of AKB and other female idol groups discover unknown idols and enjoy the process of them growing bigger and bigger, and they say it’s fun to be able to participate in and contribute to that growth process. I think that’s the kind of feeling that was the appeal of early Wings. Paul himself gave Linda lessons from scratch as she had no musical background. “If you feel like it, you can ask Billy Preston!” he scolded Linda. With a name like Paul, it would have been possible to form a band with famous musicians. However, Paul did not dare to take such an easy path. As a surprise, they toured around universities and performed live shows, and took the time to develop what was an amateurish band. It can be said that the appeal of Wings, formed by the founding members, is that it was an early stage in the growth process, the birth of Paul’s new band that peaked in 1976 and ran through the 1970s. In 1972, the Wings went on a European tour with an official announcement. At this point, their only album is “WINGS WILD LIFE”. Therefore, it must have been difficult to fill the set list with songs from his solo album, cover songs, and unreleased songs from his next album, but he performed a full stage of about 1.5 hours. As a new band had just started, they deliberately avoided England, where the press was harshly critical, in order to give the band confidence. The tour took place in two parts, in July and August 1972. During that time, the set list was almost fixed, but it changed with “Bip Bop” being the opening number in the first half of the tour and “Eat At Home” in the second half. In addition, songs such as “Cotton Fields” can be found in the leaked sound source, and many parts of the full story are unknown due to the lack of records. This is partly due to the small number of sound sources that remain, as well as the scarcity of tour records and articles from the time, but it is still possible to make some inferences from the few sound sources that remain. This work includes the Amsterdam performance on August 20, 1972, which is one of the few sound sources of the 1972 European tour. You can hear rare arrangements that cannot be seen in other performances, such as the refrain in “I Am Your Singer.” CONCERTGEBOUW AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS August 20, 1972 DISC ONE 01. Introduction 02.
