Description

“BACK TO THE EGG” in Paul’s album sessions series is finally here. First of all, it is characterized by not only recording the album but also all the session sound sources from this period that were conducted before and after the album. Contains. Although the sound sources have been leaked in fragments since the analog era, the volume has been increased compared to the previous release, and all of the leaked multiple takes are completely covered. First of all, the long version of “Reception” decorates the beginning. And “Getting Closer” includes two takes: a version without the song and a version with Denny Lane’s vocals. In particular, Denny’s version has slightly different lyrics, making me curious about the ratio of Paul’s and Denny’s contributions to this song. Also, the chorus and middle part are clearly Paul’s voice, so there is a possibility that Paul made it with the intention of having Denny sing it, and it is an interesting sound source as it contains a chorus that was not adopted in the release version. And “Spin It On”, which seems to reflect the heyday of punk, can be heard almost completed at the rough mix stage, and other songs “Again And Again And Again”, “Old Siam Sir”, “Arrow Through Me”, etc. ”, etc., each contains two versions. “Old Siam Sir” does not fade out, but plays completely and ends with Paul’s voice screaming, a vivid take unique to the studio session. And “To You”, which was recorded in 2 takes, is a complete version instead of a fade-out in both takes. This take really captures the rough atmosphere of this period, especially the second take, which ends with a psychedelic noise made by the guitar. The beautiful medley of “After The Ball” and “Winter Rose” is another highlight of this album. And, in the official version, it was connected to “Love Awake” like a medley without any interruption, but this work includes “Love Awake” which was recorded completely separately. I thought it started with only a few instruments, just a guitar, but it gradually got more exciting and even instruments that were not included in the official version were added, giving a completely different impression. And “So Glad To See You Here” by Rockestra is also a version that ends properly, and at the end “Rockestra” and “So Glad To See You Here” are played in a medley. Disc:2 is also a session for the album “Back To The Egg” and includes outtakes of the singles “Good Night Tonight” and “Daytime Nightime Suffering” that were not included in the album. In particular, “Daytime Nightime Suffering” is a song that Paul himself is so confident of calling it his favorite among the songs he has written, and it is a masterpiece that is very Wings-like, with its chorus work and modulation. It also includes three currently unreleased songs: “Ranachan Rock,” “Maisie,” and “Cage.” In particular, “Cage” is a song that Paul worked on seriously but ended up shelving, as you can hear 5 takes here. What is surprising is the song titled “Super Big Heartwave”, which, as you can hear, is a prototype of “Old Siam Sir”. Of course, the melody is different and the lyrics are not complete, and although the opening murmur is included, here it is Linda’s voice. Next is “Old Siam Sir,” which features that impressive melody. It is no exaggeration to say that this masterpiece is the highlight of this work, and the second half also includes the jam session that took place at this session. And disc: 3 contains the sessions that were held before and after the “Back To The Egg” album session. First of all, the first half was a session in a studio in Scotland, and although the title of the first two songs is “Emotional Moments”, the songs are clearly demo recordings of the prototype of “Cage”. It also includes familiar unreleased songs such as “I Can’t Write Another Song” and “It Seems Like Old Time,” as well as a short piano demo of “Rockestra Theme.” This song was also recorded on a piano tape in 1974, and the idea for the song existed in Paul’s stock from a very early stage, and he cherished it. The second half also includes a session for the soundtrack of the anime “Rupert the Bear”, which was also held at the same Scottish studio in July 1978. Although it is a soundtrack for a children’s animation, each song has an introduction by Paul, and includes songs performed by Paul on vocals, making it a must-see for Paul fans. In particular, “We All Stand Together” is a demo version with a simpler arrangement than the release version and a beautiful electric piano sound. From this period until around 1980’s “Pipes Of Peace”, this was the earliest period of creating demos using electric piano. A 3-disc set that compiles session sound sources from the period of Wings’ last album, “Back To The Egg.” This is a permanent preservation item that has never had such a rich content.
