Description

Paul McCartney’s 1970s was a decade spent as a member of Wings, a fruitful period in which sales surpassed those of The Beatles. Dark clouds began to gather over his career when he was arrested in Japan in January 1980. This caused Wings to fall apart, and at the end of the same year John Lennon was shot, leading Paul to step down from the front line, saying, “Since John was killed, I have to stay away from the stage until the excitement has died down.” In the 1980s, which was almost Paul’s age and he was in his 40s, he rarely appeared on stage, and his studio work was also lackluster. His ambitious filmmaking was not well received, and the 1980s, when light pop songs and bright hard rock were popular, could be said to have been a slump for Paul. Fortunately for Paul, he had many hit songs in the past. Moreover, there are songs from his Beatles days that would surely be well received if they were played almost untouched on stage. It is only natural that he would reach the conclusion that the stage was the only way to overcome this slump. The tour accompanying the new album “Flowers In The Dirt” took place from 1989 to 1990, the first in 10 years. This tour, commonly known as the “GET BACK TOUR”, was a big success in various places, as it was the first tour in 10 years and the set list included many songs that had never been played before. Many people in Japan saw the Tokyo Dome performance, which was realized despite the fact that it was thought that they would not be able to perform in Japan due to their past. Paul, who felt a sense of accomplishment on this tour, recorded a live recording with the tour members as the main focus. This was “Off The Ground”. With this album released in 1993, they announced that they would go on tour again after the success of the previous tour. It was a new world tour, or “THE NEW WORLD TOUR”. After all, they had a large stock of songs. Some of them were from the Beatles era that they had never performed. Above all, the new album “Off The Ground” was a great production. THE NEW WORLD TOUR kicked off in Milan in February 1993, and by December of that year, it had taken almost a year to complete a total of 77 performances. It was also that year that they performed in Japan for the second time, and it is still fresh in our memory that they performed at the Fukuoka Dome for the first time in addition to the Tokyo Dome. Moreover, as an unprecedented attempt, they sold what would now be called a VIP ticket for 100,000 yen to raise funds for LIPA. Ticket buyers had the privilege of participating in the sound check. This work is a video recording of the sound check on the first day at the Tokyo Dome on November 12, 1993. As you can see from the video, it is a leaked video taken on stage by a staff member with a handycam in hand. There is no way to know what the purpose of the video was, but each member poses with the camera in mind, and the realism that can only be achieved by filming with their own family is powerful and impressive. It is very interesting because there has never been such a video, let alone anything similar, until now. The stuffed animals on the stage, the pick with “Become a vegetarian” printed on it, the various equipment from that time, etc., were probably taken for record purposes. In “Let Me Roll It”, they also tried out a gondola that traveled around the audience. Paul occasionally sips a drink, and the mug has a Beatles design on it. Hamish wears a shaved wig and stomps his feet, conveying a very peaceful atmosphere. The sound check ends with the refrain of “Hey Jude”. Paul puts on his denim jacket and leaves the venue. However, the camera continues to roll after that, and the staff and security at the Tokyo Dome before the show starts are recorded. After that, the camera shifts to the backstage, where the interpreter is giving a lecture on the Japanese that he plans to speak in the stage MC. Paul uses hand gestures and repeatedly practices the intonation of “It’s nice to come again!” It is heartwarming. Next, he is interviewed by Japanese media backstage. The CD portion contains all the sound check recordings from around the world in 1993, all as soundboard recordings. The only song performed during the tour was the rehearsal of “Mother Nature’s Son,” which was performed at the EARTH DAY CONCERT, as well as new songs at the time, “Get Out Of My Way,” “Biker Like An Icon,” a country arrangement of “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and other songs that can only be heard during a sound check. The sound check at the Tokyo Dome on November 12, 1993 was recorded on video. The staff filmed it on stage, and this kind of footage is very rare, as I have never seen anything similar before. Not only Paul, but also the band members were at ease with the cameraman and made funny faces intentionally, with the camera in mind, capturing the charm of a very peaceful sound check in full detail. The CD portion also contains soundboard recordings from sound checks around the world. The DVD is the sound check footage from the Tokyo Dome on November 12, 1993. The CD features sound checks from around the world recorded on a soundboard. [DVD] TOKYO DOME, TOKYO JAPAN November 12, 1993 01. Opening 02. Summertime 03. Jam 04. Let Me Roll it 05.
