Description
On April 16, 1982, the long-awaited masterpiece TUG OF WAR was released. 40 years later, the ultimate analog sound is released. Recording began during the WINGS era, and after John’s sad incident, this title was finally produced by George Martin as a solo work. Paul’s first digital recording. Recording was almost completed at AIR Studios in Montserrat in February of the previous year, and at AIR Studios in London in March, and a rough version of TUG OF WAR (though the title was undecided at that time) was completed in the summer of the same year. After that, HERE TODAY was recorded additionally, and the album reconstruction work began in the fall of 1981. During this reconstruction work, the prototype master tape, probably made from the fall to winter of 1981, is the source 1 that we will deliver this time. In this source 1, you can see where HERE TODAY is cut and pasted on the analog tape, and you can also see a small amount of noise that seems to have occurred when converting the digital recording to analog on BE WHAT YOU SEE. This source was therefore scrapped, but in any case, it has a brilliant acoustic sound throughout, a sense of volume with a high density of sound in the midrange, and some parts that sound like a slightly different mix. After that, the final listening cassette made in late February 1982 is Source 2. Although this cassette has the record catalog number, the album title TUG OF WAR is not typed, and it seems that the title was undecided even at this time. Although this sound source has cassette tape hiss, it is a powerful and thick sound source, and this is the freshly made TUG OF WAR of The Analog (the one officially released now is a digital remix in 2015). Here, I will explain why Source 2 is important, because there were many retakes when making the lacquer (from the cutting master reel for analog LP that was probably made from the same master tape as this cassette). This can be seen from the fact that the matrix of the LP in the UK is 6 or later, and the matrix of the US version is F (6th) or later, and it seems that a little stronger compression was applied during cutting, and the effect is applied to the stretchiness of the tape source. In that respect, Source 2 is the one that can hear a truly natural, flat, and stretchy sound. Now, the original owner of Source 1 and Source 2 is none other than George Martin’s right-hand man, Geoff Emerick. The ultimate item that was originally in the hands of a TUG OF WAR sound engineer who had been a distinguished member of the TUG OF WAR sound engineer’s family, which was acquired at an auction by a relative, was borrowed from the current owner and digitized (note that a TUG OF WAR acetate disk also owned by Geoff is currently being sold at auction for 500,000 yen, which shows the high popularity of TUG OF WAR). Bonus tracks include various monitor mixes (from Trevor Jones’ collection), EBONY AND IVORY’s rehearsal in Montserrat (from OOBU JOOBU and broadcast on a Mexican FM station), various takes of THE GIRL IS MINE (including the normal take ripped from the test pressing, which has the highest sound quality, two DJ edits, and a demo take that has never appeared before), and as a secret track, Yaa! The Beatles’ masterpiece from the Broad Street soundtrack is also included. This is the third installment of the SUPER ANALOG MASTERS series for those who want to enjoy the strongest analog sources easily. The first installment, ABBEY ROAD, is in short supply, and the second installment, LET IT BE, is sold out. You will surely be blown away by the amazing high sound quality of the masterpiece TUG OF WAR, which is worthy of being the third installment of this popular series. Two sources of ultra-precious analog sound sources of TUG OF WAR are released to commemorate the 40th anniversary! The super analog sound source of the prototype version (produced from the fall to winter of the year before the release) owned by George Martin’s right-hand man, Geoff Emerick, [Source 1], and the final listening cassette [Source 2], have been digitized with overwhelming high sound quality! In addition, the bonus includes outtakes that have never appeared before, including Girl Is Mine.
