Description

This is a collection of sessions for the album “Tag of War” released in 1982. After the disbandment of Wings, the album was probably meant to be a return to its roots, with producer George Martin and their first collaboration since the Beatles era.The album was blessed with a hit single and reached No. 1 in the United States. It became a hit album. Paul himself is very fond of this album, and has already performed it again in the movie “Broadstreet” and still sings “Here Today” live, making it a masterpiece that is considered Paul’s masterpiece in the 1980s. This work is a compilation of outtakes and session sound sources of this masterpiece in the order of songs recorded on the album. Disc 1 is “Tug Of War” which opens the album. The vocals begin with a single track take. Paul’s voice is vivid because it is a very simple single track, making it a truly tasteful take. Contains all 4 other versions. “Take It Away” is famous for its impressive promo film, but it is a well-known fact among fans that it is a song that has been popular since the Wings era. The first recording was from the Wings rehearsal sound source. Paul is recording a very early version of the demo while carefully adding chord progressions. At this point, it seems like the middle part has not yet been planned, just the main phrase. After that, we will work on this song again as a session for the new album. A total of 11 versions are included, including the complete take up to the ending, which is the first appearance. “Ballroom Dancing” is a total of 3 takes. The first time was a performance at a Wings rehearsal. It’s very rough, and Denny Laine also adds vocals, making it a much more sinister take than the release version. Paul is singing while improvising roughly so much that I think he is drunk, and Denny also frequently joins in, making it a very enjoyable performance. The second take was even more rough, and it felt like he was singing the song to complete the song, trying to find a place that felt right, while changing the tone of his voice and the way he sang. Paul’s slightly rough voice matches the melody, and the performance seems to continue endlessly as an extension of the jam. “The Pound Is Sinking” is completed by connecting the two songs with “Hear Me Lover”, and here we have recorded demo sound sources of each separately. Disc 2 includes two versions of the demo of “Wanderlust” and two versions of “Get It”, which was created in a session with Carl Perkins. In particular, the jam sound source performed in 1993 is a light and wonderful version where the two call out to each other midway through, creating a fun atmosphere between the two. If you look at this re-performance 10 years after its release, this song is also a special song for Paul. “Dress Me Up As A Robber” includes 4 versions. The highlight of this disc is “Ebony And Ivory,” which was a hit with Stevie Wonder. It’s very thrilling to see that famous song gradually move from the demo stage to completion. The simple demo sound source is a beautiful version that conveys the beauty of the melody on its own. Then, they put Stevie in and practice their vocals endlessly. Paul’s style of singing endlessly and making the song his own, rather than something decided from the beginning, produces a good effect here as well. “Rainclouds” was released in the 1980s, but you can hear it being played in rehearsals during the Wings era. Disc 3 further follows the Wings rehearsal of “Rainclouds” and includes studio outtakes from this period that are not included in the album. In particular, “My Old Friend” is noteworthy as another co-starring song with Carl Perkins. It’s a great song with a beautiful melody, and it’s funny that Paul tends to shy away from his senior Carl Perkins. Also included are 5 songs that were shelved because they did not develop beyond the demo stage. In particular, “Seems Like Old Times” is a song that is very typical of Paul, and I can imagine that it was the basis for the later “Through Our Love” and “Beautiful Night” with the break, but it was scrapped and unreleased. It’s a song like “The World’s Most Beautiful Woman,” which would be a waste if left as is. In fact, it must have been done until just before the release, as only 3 takes of this song were recorded. And finally, a radio program in which Paul himself explains each song of the album is included. DISC ONE TUG OF WAR 01. Backing Track w/single vocal 02.
