Description

This album is a collection of tapes owned by Trevor Jones, who was Paul’s roadie, that were leaked around 2010. The first and second volumes of “A GARDEN FULL OF McCARTNEY ROSES” were released at the time, but they went out of print, and both volumes were reissued as a 4-disc set. Not only is it a collection of rare tracks from the Wings period to the late ’80s, but the contents are also full of noteworthy charm, and with all the material being released for the first time in such a large amount, it felt like Obon and New Year’s came at once. First, disc 1 contains material from the Wings period, from his first solo single “Another Day” to the album “Back to the Egg.” “Another Day” and “Hi Hi Hi” are from acetate. The following “Live And Let Die” is a surprising studio outtake. Paul’s vocals are something we’ve never heard before, and it’s a simple version with just keyboards and drums, without any orchestra. The reggae-like middle section is unfinished, and Linda shouts something, and the song ends in a mess. Then, once it is finished, Paul gives instructions on how to do this part and starts over, but the melody does not come out of nowhere, and it ends in a mess. “Soily” is an outtake from “One Hand Clapping”. The performance is so powerful that it makes the performances on the later world tour feel tedious. The remix of “Junior’s Farm” and the rough mix of “Mull Of Kintyre” each have the original countdown. The second half of disc 1 is a collection of recordings related to “Back To The Egg”. Disc 2 is also amazing, with all the recordings I have never heard before. First, there is a studio outtake of “Take It Away” from the Wings “Tug Of War” session. This is also very vivid, and it is probably from the early sessions, and it is a detailed record of Paul giving instructions to the band members while playing himself. Also from this session is the Wings version of “No Values,” which was later included in the film “Broad Street.” You can enjoy Paul’s improvisation in the middle part, which is not included in the released version. After a rough mix of “COLD CUTS,” the session for “Tug Of War,” which was abandoned with Wings, is resumed after he became a solo artist. “Take It Away” here is quite complete. “What’s That You’re Doing” with Stevie Wonder is an endless jam-like performance. The first half ends with a promotional medley for “CHOBA B CCCP,” which was released only in the Soviet Union in 1988 and later released worldwide. All of the recordings are short, and are meant to introduce the album in medley format. However, although it is said to be to introduce the album, the contents are rare, including songs that were not included in the album, and cannot be overlooked. The notable songs that were not included in the album are “Cut Across Shorty,” “It’s Now Or Never,” which was later included in the tribute album, and “No Other Baby,” which was included in “Run Devil Run” 10 years later. It is known that they played this song at a sound check in 1993, but it was recorded in anticipation of the album at this point. The following songs, “Poor Boy” and “Take This Hammer,” are also not included in the album. Furthermore, there is “Lend Me Your Comb,” which was performed at a BBC session during the Beatles era. The intro riff is so cool that it seems to surpass even the Beatles. And the last song is “Ain’t That A Shame,” which is also included in the album, but it is a different take with a completely different vocal. Paul’s ad-lib explodes, and in contrast to the quiet and strict take of the released version, it is an amazing take where he sings in a crazy way. Disc 3 is from a tour rehearsal held in September 1975. The same label has released almost one stage of the album under the title “1975 STUDIO TOUR REHEARSALS,” but the recordings on this album are outtakes that were not included in the album, and of course they are recorded on a soundboard. The tour was about to start, and even in a relaxed atmosphere, the performance was full of energy. Paul’s singing in particular was impressive, as he changed his singing style as if searching for the part where he should use his fist. Next is a session recording from Nashville in 1974. First, two songs from the studio rehearsal. “Junior’s Farm” is a version with no vocals and only the instruments, and Jimmy’s intense guitar can be clearly heard. “Sally G” is a version where the intro was redone after a failed introduction. The last two tracks are rough mixes of “Junio’s Farm,” which starts with a count-in by the staff, and “Sally G,” which also starts with a count-in. The last track on disc 1 is a rough mix related to 1978’s “BACK TO THE EGG.” Disc 4 is also full of interesting recordings. The first track is a recording of a rehearsal in a studio in 1980. It is unclear under what circumstances this was recorded, but since it is credited to 1980 but is under the name of Wings, it must have been recorded just before their visit to Japan in the new year. “Your Lucky Day,” with vocals by Lawrence Juber, who we never got to hear during his Wings days, is a pretty melodic and good song. There is an improvisation in between, and “Lend Me Your Comb,” which is also familiar from the Beatles’ performance. It must have been a favorite song of theirs, as it is clear from the recordings on disc 2 that they tried to record this song later during the “CHOBA B CCCP” sessions. Other tracks on the disc include “Your True Love” and then “Lend Me Your Comb” again, Buddy Holly’s “Oh Boy,” “Peggy Sue,” “Ain’t That A Shame,” “I’m In Love Again,” and “Sheik Of Araby,” which was also recorded for the Decca audition. These tracks make you think that the Wings sessions would have resulted in a rock and roll album a few years later. The second half of disc 4 includes eight rough mixes of “COLD CUTS.” There is a clear difference in “Robber’s Ball,” which has studio chat in the intro, but the rest of the tracks are new, but there is not much difference from the previous takes. The last three tracks are demos of “The Honorary Consul,” recorded in 1983. It was written as the theme song for the movie of the same name, and since the movie itself has not been released in Japan, it is a fairly minor number among Paul’s songs that only a few people know about. The 1987 instrumental version of “Where’s the Sun?” is a mix that emphasizes the rhythm track. And finally, a rough mix of “Somedays” from the 1997 Flaming Pie sessions. The vocals are a different take from the released version. DISC ONE ORIGINAL ACETATES 01. Another Day (Acetate Version) 02. Hi Hi Hi (Acetate Version) WINGS STUDIO SESSIONS 03.
