Description

Paul McCartney has entered 2018 with warm-up gigs in Liverpool and London in June and July. Then, on September 7, 2018, a special live performance was held at a special stage in New York’s Grand Central Station. Although the set list is simpler than usual, there is no sense of Paul’s decline as a musician, and although the band has already entered its 16th year since becoming a member, everyone is performing wonderfully. Finally, they announced that they will be going on a new tour titled FRESHEN UP TOUR, replacing the previous ONE ON ONE TOUR. The tour will kick off in Canada in September 2018, include festival appearances, and has an American schedule scheduled for 2019. Then, in 2018, a performance was held in Japan as part of this FRESHEN UP TOUR. Even he himself would not have expected that at the age of 76, more than half a century after he first came to Japan at the age of 24, he would still be performing large-scale stadium concerts in faraway Japan. The schedule is as follows. October 31, 2018 Tokyo Dome November 1, 2018 Tokyo Dome November 5, 2018 Ryogoku Kokugikan November 8, 2018 Nagoya Dome This is the first Ryogoku Kokugikan, and the 1980 Wings was scheduled. It is unique in that it includes the Nagoya performance, which was originally canceled. Although the number of Tokyo Dome performances has been reduced from three last time to two, it would be impossible for an artist other than a big name like Paul to have the mobilization power to fill the dome stadium over and over again. This work is a complete recording of the first day of the 2018 Tokyo Dome performance, including the sound check. A distinctive feature of the FRESHEN UP TOUR is that they have added new songs from their new album “EGYPT STATION” to their repertoire. Moreover, he played two songs, “Who Cares” and “Come On To Me” at the beginning of the concert, and “Fuh You” in the middle. All of these songs seem to have been designed with concert performance in mind, and serve as an important accent to the stage composition. Also, “From Me To You” will be premiered on this tour. It is one of the Beatles’ representative songs from the very early days, and is featured as one of their acoustic corner songs. Other than that, if you just look at the songs on the set list, contrary to the tour title, there are no fresh selections, and there are songs that have been played before. However, if we were to highlight the characteristics of this tour, we should focus on the arrangements rather than the songs. The major difference from traditional Paul stages is the addition of a brass section. Until now, with the exception of Wings in the 70’s, basically no one other than band members joined Paul’s stage. Of course, there were times when bagpipe bands took the stage and guests performed. However, there were no musicians who accompanied the tour and participated in the concert production every night. For the first time, a brass section joined the band. The arrangement intentionally takes advantage of the fact that the sounds that had previously been substituted by Wicks’s keyboard are now played using real instruments. The brass section makes its first appearance on “Letting Go.” What’s more, the audience is excited by the surprise performance that is suddenly performed by the members who are lined up in the audience seats instead of on the stage. In the second half of the song, a short brass solo is inserted into the break, making the arrangement even more outstanding. It is also featured extensively in the new song “Come On To Me”. The brass section also plays an important role in “Let ‘Em In,” “Lady Madonna,” “Ob La Di Ob La Da,” “Live And Let Die,” “Hey Jude,” and the final Abbey Road medley. . Additionally, the Japanese word “ichiban” is used in the song “Back In Blazil” from the album “Egypt Station”. It was previously rumored that this song would be premiered in Japan, but in the end it was added as an intro at the beginning of “Come On To Me”. Although it is a small detail, this is also an arrangement that was first introduced in Japan. [Tokyo Dome performance on November 1, 2018] This is the second day of the 2018 performance in Japan. Basically, it has the characteristics of FRESHEN UP TOUR, but this day’s content is even more interesting than the first day. The album opens with “A Hard Day’s Night,” but the second song “Hi Hi Hi” has been replaced with “Junior’s Farm.” When performing consecutive performances at the same venue, Paul usually changes the set list by several songs, and this practice is being followed this time as well. Additionally, “All My Loving” became “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “I’ve Just Seen A Face” became “We Can Work It Out,” and “Yesterday” became “I Saw Her Standing There.” It has been changed. The biggest feature of this day was that “Got To Get You Into My Life” was played for the first time on the FRESHEN UP TOUR. It is not a replacement for another song that was cut, but this song is simply being added on this day. Since they originally had a horn section accompany them on tour, it was thought that this song would be the most successful, but strangely it had never been played before. This is the first song performed on the second day of Japan’s Tokyo Dome. Disc 3 is the sound source of the sound check that was held before the actual performance on the day. A public sound check for VIP tickets that will perform rare songs and cover songs that will not be performed in the main event. This day’s sound check was extremely fulfilling compared to the previous day. “Twenty Flight Rock” is a cover that Paul likes, which has been played many times in the past, but on this day he is playing with a completely new arrangement. “Blue Suade Shoes” also has a laid-back bluesy arrangement. And “Got To Get You Into My Life”, which was played in the main part, was also played at this time just before. At first, it was thought to be a hidden ball for the Ryogoku Kokugikan, but it is also played in the main story. Furthermore, the horn section has a very effective arrangement in “Magical Mystery Tour” as well. This is not played in the main part, but it will probably be included in the set list in the future. In addition, the biggest highlight of the day was “I Don’t Know.” This song, which is the second track on their new album “Egypt Station,” has never been performed live before, and this day is probably the first time it has been performed. From the 2018 performance in Japan, the second day of the Tokyo Dome performance on November 1st was completely recorded in ultra-high quality from the front row. It is recorded with the highest sound quality in the performance in Japan so far. If you can follow Paul’s live performances since 2003 in real time, this time as well, you will be able to get the latest tours from time to time with the label that has been delivering them in high quality as soon as possible. I think that many titles will be released this time as well, but there is no need to compare them with others, as long as this work is the definitive one, it will be enough. ■Complete recording of the Tokyo Dome performance on November 1, 2018 ■Super high-quality sound with a front row recording that covers the stage ■Complete recording from the sound check before the performance ■“Got To Get You Into” with the addition of a horn section “My Life” tour premiere ■”I Don’t Know” premiered at sound check TOKYO DOME, TOKYO JAPAN November 1, 2018 DISC ONE 01.
