Description
After releasing the album “FLOWERS IN THE DIRT”, Paul’s world tour first went to Europe and the US, and it was in 1990 that he toured his native UK. In January of that year, he toured London and Birmingham, and for his fans in his home country, this was the first long-awaited tour since Wings in 1979. However, he did not go to Paul’s hometown Liverpool on the January schedule, and the triumphant return to Liverpool, which both fans and Paul were longing for, was realized in June. This June tour was a very unique period in the itinerary from 1989 to 1990, and he performed only three times in the UK. One of them was at Knebworth on the 30th, which was a short set for the event, and high-quality radio broadcasts and items containing them appeared, and they quickly became best-sellers. Each performance of this short UK tour was unique, and it is evaluated by enthusiasts as a special period even in the 1990 stage, when the performance level was always high. However, things are not going so easily for Paul on the 28th, his first performance in Liverpool in a long time. This was also broadcast on the radio, but unfortunately only less than half of the actual live performance was broadcast, and this is where the first miso was added. Nevertheless, due to the nature of the broadcast sound source, items also appeared following Knebworth. However, they all had a major problem of being uniformly slow in pitch. Similarly, the items recording Billy Joel’s 1990 live broadcast in London also had a low pitch, and it is possible that the taper recorded in that form spread the sound source in the same year. In the end, not only was the pitch out of whack, but items like “IMAGINE IN LIVERPOOL”, which was full of flaws such as fading out just before the end of the performance of “Back In The U.S.S.R.” and not recording the medley starting with the last “Golden Slumbers”, appeared, and it seems that despite being a recent stereo sound board recording, it has become a sad sound source that is not recognized by fans. In the first place, the items released so far have a bad impression of poor sound quality even before the pitch deviation, and the previous Knebworth had perfect sound quality, which makes it even more different. In the meantime, only the John Lennon medley, which is the highlight of this period, was released from the Liverpool performance as a coupling with the single “All My Trials” from the live album “TRIPPING THE LIVE FANTASTIC”, and while the desire of enthusiasts that the entire previous broadcast could be heard with that sound quality increased, the situation where there was no sign of the appearance of the upper version has continued for more than 20 years since the performance. It is rare to have such an unfortunate existence in radio sound sources. It was the limited press CD “LIVERPOOL 1990” released in 2013 that finally put an end to such a situation. Not only was it recorded with accurate pitch, but it appeared as an undisputed upper version with clearly improved sound quality than past items, and it was sold out beautifully. The wonderful sound quality of the past items is close to the official “TRIPPING THE LIVE FANTASTIC”, and yet the mixing is not as neatly organized as the album, which is attractive. After all, Paul is on stage at his first triumphant return performance in a long time, so a stereo sound board recording with such a good balance makes the momentum of the performance more realistic. Of course, there are no meaningless cuts or missing parts. That’s why requests for a re-release have been received for a long time, and the release will be realized this week. Since it was already a high-quality sound source, it was possible to simply re-release it, but when I reviewed the sound source, the separation of the low-frequency range was poor, so I applied equalization to improve that. For example, you can easily hear the difference by listening to a fast-paced and intense performance like “I Saw Her Standing There”. The equalization this time has tightened the low range. This makes the original official level sound source even easier to hear, and the ease of listening because it fits on one CD is also a big point.
