This rare live recording of a special quartet that played only 16 shows at European jazz festivals in June and July 1993 during a break in Pat’s tour with his Secret Story Band, blending tradition and revolution, is now available for the first time in the finest quality sound! In order to help young talent Joshua gain wider recognition, Pat took a month off from touring with the Secret Story Band, a major project he had been planning for many years, to focus on jazz festivals where more people could gather. The Pat Metheny Special Quartet was formed with the same powerful members as Joshua’s “WISH” album, Pat, Joshua, and Higgins, and the young and rising bassist Christian McBride. This rare concert was also officially recorded at the Nice Jazz Festival in France on July 14, 1993. This two-disc set has been recorded over an hour and a half, directly from the superb high-quality stereo soundboard master! ! The concert was composed mainly of songs from Joshua’s masterpiece “WISH” and Pat’s songs, and Joshua showed his skills to the fullest throughout the concert, including his characteristic full-body twisting and blowing, and the opening of the song with an unaccompanied solo in multiphonic playing. Pat, who leads the quartet, gave us a performance of his unique improvisation, singing expressively throughout the concert, which can only be described as his own. In addition, the vivid rhythm changes and various style presentations by McBride, who is the idol of the new generation, and Higgins, who is as old as his father, are also innovative, incorporating bop, mode, and free jazz, and further creating a comfortable sense of discomfort with a unique sense that naturally incorporates humor and dynamism.
