Description

From the newly excavated new master from the tour from July to November 1982, when PMG’s first live album “Travels” was officially recorded, a two-disc set has been released that completely records the Kansas City performance on a superb high-quality stereo soundboard! ! ! PMG’s first live album “Travels” was compiled from live performances from July to October of the US tour of 80 performances held in conjunction with the release of “Off Ramp”, the third album of the Pat Metheny Group, with bassist Mark Egan replaced by Steve Rodby and the participation of Brazilian genius percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. It is a popular masterpiece that won a Grammy Award, but due to the recording time, only a part of it was included, and it is undeniable that it feels indigestible now. Here you can hear the full story of the 80-show 1982 tour, including the performance at Midland Music Hall in Kansas City on July 29th. The recently unearthed, high-quality stereo soundboard master, which has excellent balance of each instrument and clearly captures each instrument, has been carefully remastered by the label’s own label, and a two-disc set has been released that completely records over two and a half hours, including the encore! This 1982 tour only had 11 songs recorded on the album “Travels”, but in fact, as you can hear in this work, they performed about 18 songs over one stage for two and a half hours, and “James”, “Heartland”, “Jaco”, “American Garage”, and other songs that were not included in “Travels”, as well as Metheny’s solo corner and Nana’s solo at the end are also completely recorded. Also, the order of the songs played on “Travels” was different, but of course they are recorded exactly as they were performed on the day. The 1982 tour included over 80 shows, and now it is said to be a legendary “sold-out tour,” with all the shows sold out at the reservation stage, so its popularity must have been immense. In response to the overwhelming response, PMG naturally put on a passionate performance, with Metheny’s creative playing using his Gibson semi-acoustic guitar, Ibanez 12-string guitar, Guild acoustic guitar, Roland guitar synth, and computer instrument Synclavier, as well as specially featured Nana and other members of the core of the PMG sound, such as Maze, Rodby, and Dan Gottlieb, playing their best, and the performance was overwhelming with the enthusiasm of the whole group. Furthermore, the band ensemble, which had been cultivated through 80 shows, is now in its final stages, and the performance is perfect, like a studio recording, making it a wonderful performance that is sure to please! This tour was well received, winning a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, and solidifying PMG’s reputation as a live band even more than their studio recordings. This is a masterpiece of PMG’s performance at the height of their power!!!
