Description

Pat Martino, a legendary guitarist who began his professional career at the age of 15 and continued to pursue the possibilities of jazz guitar for half a century with his virtuoso technique described as “machine gun”, has passed away. This is the first time that a spectacular live performance from his heyday, accompanied by young bassists Jeff Berlin and Gil Goldstein, whose virtuosity surpassed Jaco’s, is available! This album was released in San Francisco in December 1975, when Pat was at the peak of his creativity and at the peak of his energy, and in the middle of recording his first album after the transfer to major label Warner Records. Jeff Berlin was set to replace Mark Johnson as the first electric bassist for the Bill Evans Trio (this did not happen due to Evans’ death), and Jaco also declared that he was the best bassist in the world. Jeff was also chosen to replace Mark Johnson as the first electric bassist for the Bill Evans Trio (this did not happen due to Evans’ death), and was recorded by Jeff in the early stages of his career, along with other bassists such as the Gil Evans Orchestra, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Goldstein, and others. In addition to Hall, Gil Goldstein, who was in high demand not only as a keyboardist but also as an arranger, was just starting his full-fledged career, the talented saxophonist Bob Hammond, and Anton Fig, who would later become very busy as a session drummer, were also featured, along with the debut of Marty Noquintet, a spectacular live performance by these incredible members, all of whom would later become very successful, all of whom were unknown at the time. This two-disc set has been recorded in almost complete form over the course of an hour and a half, with superb high quality sound that has been meticulously mastered by the label itself! The concert featured the Taito numbers from “Starbright” which was being recorded at the time, as well as “City Lights”, and each song was played for 15 to 25 minutes, which is 3 to 4 times longer than the studio version. Pat’s amazing solo, which he played like a machine gun, was the first to feature, and Gil, Bob, Jeff, and others also featured plenty of solos, making this a great performance that will make you feel like you’re intoxicated with the true essence of a live performance! From 4 beats to soul jazz and jazz rock, which are unique to this period and cannot be heard since the revival, there is an endless parade of precious performances! From the very beginning, Jeff Berlin, who grooves with a tapping technique that is rarely heard after that, Hammond blows freelance, and when Martino’s solo finally begins, the atmosphere of the place changes in an instant. It won’t stop! The superb technique of picking phrases that are difficult even for professionals, with speed like a machine gun, is simply overwhelming! In addition, Pat’s unique and beautiful tone, his unparalleled octave playing technique that he developed from Wes, and other jazz guitar techniques are all fully utilized, and he generously performs a performance that is truly like a model of jazz guitar throughout the entire album. Live at San Francisco, CA December 1975 Audience Recording 98 min Pat Martino – Guitar Bob Hammond – Saxophone, Flute Gil Goldstein – Keyboard Jeff Berlin – Bass Anton Fig – Drums 2 Disc’s Including City Lights, Starbrite and Great Stream
