Description
After finishing the “DIARY OF A MADMAN” tour with his first Japan tour in July 1982, Ozzy performed a special gig in New York on September 26th and 27th to produce a live album, which had been planned since Randy Rhoads was still in the band. The live performance, which consisted of all BLACK SABBATH songs, became Ozzy’s first official solo live work, “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”. Some say that it was a dig at BLACK SABBATH’s live work “LIVE EVIL” released at the same time, but this live work meant that Brad’s performance was recorded on Ozzy’s official work. After the album was released, the band planned a European tour, including the UK, for about a month, and performed four shows in the UK in December 1982. This work is an audience recording of the performance at the Birmingham “National Exhibition Center” (commonly known as Birmingham N.E.C.) on December 12th, the first day of the short UK tour, with excellent ease of listening and directness of the performance. This sound source was released as a record under the title “GILLIS LIVES” about 10 years ago, and it has been one of the hidden classics among enthusiasts since then, as “you can enjoy a precious live performance with an easy-to-listen-to sound image”. This time, the master of the sound source has been fully remastered, and the brightness, clarity, and sound balance of the sound have been further refined, and it has been brushed up so that you can enjoy it with better sound quality. The feature of this sound source is the performance with a rare lineup only for this time. Rudy Sarzo left the band after the production of “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL”, and Pete Way of UFO participated as a substitute bass. Furthermore, Brad also left the band at the end of ’82, so it can be said that the performance left here is very valuable. Brad showed off his amazing playing from the opening “Over The Mountain” and “Mr. Crowley”, and his favorite arm playing was featured in “Crazy Train” and solos. Is there any fan who wouldn’t be happy to hear this performance with a direct feeling and closeness like a line source? Another highlight of the “SPEAK OF THE DEVIL” tour is the SABBATH number “Sweet Leaf” played consecutively from Brad’s guitar solo! This song exploded in Black Sabbath’s hometown of Birmingham, and the fans at the venue were delighted, and you can hear the audience singing along with Ozzy from the recording. Tommy’s drum solo is also included in the song, and you can enjoy his dynamic playing with a realistic tone. The live performance, which features intense performances of “I Don’t Know”, “Believer” and “Flying High Again”, ends with the usual SABBATH number three in a row. The intro of “Iron Man” filled the venue with excitement, and the following “Children Of The Grave” and the encore “Paranoid” also delighted the audience. The intense reaction to the SABBATH numbers will make any enthusiast say, “As expected of Birmingham!” After the end of the ’82 UK tour, which consisted of only four shows, Brad Gills left Ozzy and started NIGHT RANGER with his comrades from the RUBICON era. Jake E. Lee, who was selected by audition in January ’83, joined Ozzy’s band as Randy’s official successor, opening up a new era. This rare live take from the final days of Brad’s era can be enjoyed with sound quality that is undoubtedly the best of the audience recordings of the time, making this a must-listen for Ozzy enthusiasts.
