Description

“ROCK IN RIO” was a highlight of the “Howl at the Moon” era and the final performance. This set of two superb masters is here. This work features two videos from a single show: the “January 19, 1985 Rio de Janeiro performance.” These are multi-camera pro shots. The Jake era can be roughly divided into the “Howl at the Moon” era and the “Crime and Punishment” era, with significantly different costumes and members. “ROCK IN RIO” is a highlight of the former. The “Howl at the Moon” era also featured several iconic pro shots, including official footage from Salt Lake City, so let’s start by examining the relative positions of each show from an overview of their activities at the time. 1983 (Jake joins) January 12th-30th: Europe #1 (13 shows) (Bridgewater replaces Ailey) February 11th-April 5th: North America #1 (34 shows) (Costa replaces Daisley) May 29th: US FESTIVAL ’83 appearance *COMPLETE VIDEO *Aldridge replaces Apis *November 15th “Howl at the Moon” released November 10th-December 22nd: Europe #2 (32 shows) *ROCK POP 1983 1984 January 10th – February 20th: North America #2 (31 shows) (Apis replaced by Aldridge) March 3rd – June 10th: North America #3 (61 shows) ← ※ Official video June 28th – July 7th: Japan (8 shows) August 4th: Puerto Rico August 18th – September 2nd: Europe #3 (5 shows) 1985 January 16th + 19th: ROCK IN RIO (2 shows) ← ★ Here ★ (Daisley / Aldridge / Airey left) This is the journey from Jake’s joining to before 1985. The appearance at “ROCK IN RIO” was the last activity even during the “Howl at the Moon” era. There were two appearances, “January 16th” and “January 19th”, but the professional shots were left on the latter. In other words, it was also the final stage of the “Ozzy/Jake/Daisley/Aldridge/Ailey” lineup that created “Howl at the Moon.” This work is the highest quality version of such a classic pro shot. Moreover, it is a definitive set that includes two different broadcasts with different content. Let’s take a look at each of the contents. DISC 1: The most recent, highest quality update master of the complete version. First up is the complete pro shot of the full show. The complete version has been popular for some time, but this is the upgraded master. Released following Ozzy’s death, its visual beauty is the best ever and super natural. While not touted as “completely official!” only for South American broadcasts in the 1980s, it is far more beautiful than the best versions ever. The screen, with its rough dubbing marks and tape twist significantly reduced, is clearly young and meticulous down to the finest detail. Above all, there are no traces of digital processing, and while the colors are subdued at first glance, the colors are natural and the details are not lost in the highlights. Those who have loved the previous masters will be amazed by the vivid visual beauty while maintaining its natural texture. DISC 2: A separate broadcast with official sound. DISC 2, which replaces DISC 1, is a different version that updates the peak in a different way. It was likely broadcast separately, not a complete full show, but rather includes documentary scenes such as interviews and press conferences. The live scenes are also edited differently, allowing for different angles than the complete version (DISC 1). Above all, the quality is impressive. The vividly restored image through digital mastering is impressive, but even more so is the audio. This is a completely official soundboard, on par with or better than the official Salt Lake City footage. Moreover, it’s not just a quality upgrade. A closer look reveals that the complete version includes the chorus where the microphone was pointed toward the audience, and the content of the promotion has also changed. This is purely speculation, but it’s possible that the vocals were re-recorded for the separate broadcast. Also, as mentioned above, DISC 2 is incomplete, but it still clocks in at approximately 55 minutes. The gaps between songs and drum solos are mainly omitted, with only two cuts from the Sabbath era. Jake’s version of “Over the Mountain” is also a great addition. Finally, let’s summarize the contents by comparing it with the complete version (DISC 1). Randy Era (8 songs): Blizzard of Oz: I Don’t Know / Mr. Crowley / Revelation (Mother Earth) / Steal Away (The Night) / Suicide Solution / Crazy Train; Diary of a Madman: Over the Mountain / Flyin’ High Again; Other (4 songs): Howling at the Moon: Bark At the Moon / Centre Of Eternity; Paranoid: Iron Man (★) / Paranoid (★). Note: * indicates tracks only included on DSIC 1. This was the last day of the festival, with Daisley, Aldridge, and Airey, all of whom had been with Ozzy Osbourne during the Randy era, leaving the band. This marked a major turning point. “Rock in Rio” was not only a historic, massive festival, but also a major turning point in Ozzy Osbourne’s history. This is the definitive set of two of the highest quality masters. Rockodrome, Rock In Rio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil 19th January 1985 PRO-SHOT(2 Versions) Disc 1(73:57) 1. Carl Orff: Carmina Burana 2.
