Description
Among Oasis’ activities in the 2000s, the tour for the album “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” was a particularly powerful period. The tour took a very long time compared to their previous live activities, lasting almost a year. Thanks to this, various live performances have been released, both in real time and now, and in the past year alone, overseas performances such as “BERLIN 2002 DAT MASTER” and “COMPLETE WITNNESS FESTIVAL 2002” and Japanese performances such as “YOYOGI 2002 1ST NIGHT: DAT MASTER” and “YOYOGI 2002 FINAL NIGHT” have been released on CD. However, this situation only applies to the 2002 leg…or more specifically, the Japan tour. In Japan, the band was especially excited about their visit to Japan in the fall, and recordings from their visit to Japan were released one after another in real time. However, as soon as it ended, it seems that interest in the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour waned, not only in Japan but also around the world. The tour itself was held until the end of the year, and then a short European leg was held in March of the following year, concluding the tour. There were few items for this period, and even to this day there are no press CD items. One of these factors is that Liam’s voice was quite tired due to the live activities he spent 2002, and it seems as if he had given it his all in the Japanese performances. In fact, even if you listen to the existing sound sources from the end of the year, his voice is not in good condition. Even if you take that into account, there are extremely few items from this period, and now that nearly 20 years have passed since the tour, most enthusiasts have never heard the sound sources or performances from the second half of the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour. In order to break this situation, the performance in Dusseldorf on March 9, 2003 will be released. The audience recording on this day had very good sound quality, and the quality was undoubtedly suitable for a press CD. The sound image was close and the recording state was very clear. However, the sound source was not widespread in real time, so no items were produced, and there were problems even after the sound source appeared. When the original sound source was circulated on the Internet in the late 2000s, the DAT tape deteriorated over time and digital noise was mixed in several places. This was particularly noticeable in the first two songs of the live performance, and this was the reason why the sound source with excellent sound quality could not be produced. However, fortunately, in 2021, thanks to the evolution of technology, it has become possible to remove all of these noises at the time of release. If you are a fanatic who has heard the original sound source, you will definitely be surprised at how well it has been cleaned up. The thorough work is not limited to removing noise. For example, it even deals with the change in recording volume that occurred in “Better Man,” and has polished it up to a stable state that is no longer comparable to the original recording. And it is no exaggeration to say that the content is a series of highlights. The set list was improved to start the 2003 short leg, which was the last duty of the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour. The opening is the surprising “Bring It On Down”. Alan White only played this song on this short tour, and the bouncy rhythm, which is completely different from the original Tony McCarroll’s straightness, is fresh. In addition, there may be many people who are hearing Alan’s version of this song for the first time with this release. However, when the song begins, Liam’s voice is not sharp. It’s almost like the infamous “meow voice” from 2005 is starting to appear. Regarding his condition here, Noel reveals before the performance of “Little By Little” later in the live, that Liam had a cold. He didn’t have any problems during the two days in Dublin, which were one of the few performances where items were released on the 2003 tour, so he must have caught a cold during the trip to Germany. However, fortunately, Liam recovered quickly in Düsseldorf. Also, unlike in 2005, his voice age was two years younger, which is a big factor. Thanks to this, they were able to smoothly sing “Supersonic”, which was not performed the previous year, and “Champagne Supernova”, which was revived as the closing repertoire before the encore in this short tour. More than that, the biggest thing to hear in the short 2003 leg is “Songbird”, a rare live performance. This masterpiece became a regular repertoire until Oasis’ disbandment in 2005, but it was only performed live eight times in 2003 on the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour. There may be more people who don’t even know that it was performed in real time now. Compared to the version that became established as a repertoire after 2005, the performance is simpler than the original song, and there is still no Noel’s harmony like in later live performances, and it is interesting that Liam, the composer, counts himself and starts the performance. Also, the pattern of Noel playing the riff of The Beatles’ “Day Tripper” during the break of “Cigarettes & Alcohol” has been passed down among enthusiasts as a rare arrangement only for this time, but the development of the song by forcing it back from that riff is really interesting. It is a great achievement that this precious arrangement, which was only heard for a very short period from the end of 2002, was first recorded. It even captures the amusing happening of “Force Of Nature”, where Noel missed the timing of the count and the intro became long. Until now, the only item that existed in Dublin at the beginning of the tour was the short-term leg of 2003, and this is the first release from there. Above all, even though it was the same “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour, the composition and performance were different from 2002, and it looked fresh!
