The 2002 tour in support of the album “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” had a huge presence in the Finsbury Park radio broadcast in July, and several other performances were also broadcast (excluding the Japan performance). b) It was a time when there were extremely few items containing audience recordings. Although the tour had started at the end of June before the album was released, radio broadcasts in Belfast were also realized at this time. However, the content is far from a complete recording, and there was also the problem that the sound quality was indescribably bland compared to Finsbury Park etc., although it was a sound board, perhaps due to the limitations of the webcast technology at the time. Because it was a time when we were blessed with such a sound board environment, it is a shame that the excellent audience recordings from the same period missed the release timing in 2002. In fact, some of the performances were excellent in both sound quality and performance content. To prove that, the Berlin performance on June 24th will be released this time. Following the highly popular “NAGOYA 1994 DAT MASTER” and “FUJI ROCK 2001: DAT MASTER,” the sound source provided by Kinney captures his first overseas performance. Kinney has recording connections over there, so that in itself is not surprising, but the quality of this audience recording is really wonderful. Although it does not reach the level where it can be described as “just like a sound board” in terms of sound image, it does not mean that there is a sense of distance. In particular, the recording balance centered on Liam’s voice is exquisite and truly an ideal audience recording. Also, when you think of an Oasis concert, you hear choruses coming from the audience seats, and while this erupts from the left and right, it doesn’t drown out the music or the singing. The charm of this sound source is the exquisite balance in which the main character of the sound image is the oasis. Rather, I’d say it’s the comfort of being present without any sarcasm. I think the secret lies in the venue on this day. The Columbia Halle in Berlin, which was the stage, is a theater with a capacity of 3,500 people, and is naturally a unique venue for the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour. Large-scale festival-level venues like Finsbury Park are commonplace, and the tour has a strong image of being an arena even if it’s small, but in fact, at the beginning of the tour, we held a gig at a theater class venue as a warm-up, and here we are. Columbia Halle was also a gig that was realized as part of this (and the first big venue was Belfast). The unique listening experience that I have mentioned so far was a reflection of the small venue of 3,500 people. In other words, the charm of the original sound source is that even though it is the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour, you can enjoy it with the intimate sense of being in a small venue. If Kinney was able to capture such a valuable gig, the release on a limited press CD is obvious. In this way, the gig is full of intimacy and the performance content is exquisite. First of all, it should be noted that this series of warm-up gigs was the longest set list on the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour. In other words, they probably tried to incorporate all the candidate repertoires at the start of the tour. Among them, “Gas Panic!”, a remnant from the previous tour, disappeared only during the warm-up period. Nowadays, the fact that the same song was performed in 2002 may be overlooked. Speaking of the live version of this song, like “FUJI ROCK 2001: DAT MASTER”, the tempo increased in the second half of the performance with Alan White’s drums as a cue, and from there it was a development that turned into a jam. However, the 2002 version, which was short-lived, kept the same tempo as the “STANDING ON THE SHOULDER OF GIANTS” album version, but evolved into a profound performance. Alan’s drumming in particular is so heavy that it almost gives off a Bonzo feeling, and it’s a shame that it was dropped from the set. What is more noteworthy is that Liam Gallagher’s voice is the best, as it is just after the start of the tour. You can clearly feel the team’s determination to warm up and be in perfect condition ahead of the upcoming Finsbury Park. As if to prove that, he sang the entire concert perfectly. It’s encouraging to see how they were able to finish the finale, “My Generation,” with ease. On the other hand, since the set list for the “HEATHEN CHEMISTRY” tour had just been introduced, “Morning Glory” started even though Liam, who had misunderstood the composition that he had not yet memorized, told him it was a “new song.” It’s interesting to see how the audience is chanting “?” in the closing scene. This is also an incident unique to the warm-up that took place before the actual tour. Fans who got familiar with 2002 at Finsbury Park and performances in Japan will definitely listen to the rich sense of presence, as well as the energetic band including Liam, and the short-lived repertoire “Gas Panic!”. The earliest rare gig in a row. Anyway, the energetic performance was truly wonderful, and above all, the mild sound quality combined with the tight acoustics unique to the small venue was truly attractive. Shocking release of the best audience album from the first stage of the tour, which had no items until now, on Kinney Master!
