Description
NPG Q, short for New Power Generation Quartet, is a jazz band created by Prince for a live performance at Paisley Park in Candice Springs in July 2014. You can enjoy the live performance below. Drums include John Blackwell, the strongest drummer in Prince’s band, and Andrew Gauche (gospel bassist in Chaka Khan’s band, Prince’s band members at Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis on January 16, 2013) Marcus Anderson plays the saxophone (he joined NPG during the 2012 tour and is the main horn player), and Xavier Taplin plays the keyboard (formerly of the jazz band Ghost Note and played by TOTO). (Also active as a support member). Prince had them rehearse a few songs for about two weeks, and they performed live at Paisley Park on August 10, 2014, titled the Supermoon Recording Session. A valuable audience recording at that time is now available (at this time it was announced as a 4-person band NPJazz). At the time, Prince tweeted about NPG Q, saying that the band was currently in the studio and mixing, and that Prince’s poster boy, Dr. Funken Berry, announced that Prince would be recording nine new songs. It seems that an album release was being considered. Nick West also said that they made the video, including Kirk Johnson. We didn’t know the names of the songs at that point, but it turned out to be EBlues and Shaft. This is almost the only completely recorded live performance of NPG Q, recorded with a wonderful sense of realism. Their album has not been released, but if they had, they would have played all the songs from it (actually, it is possible to make an album of the performances from this live performance). It is very jazzy and funky, and very Enjoy professional performance. Hit It And Quit It is a very cheerful number, and it has the same name as a Funkadelic song. However, there is a sense of commonality in funkness. The highlight is Prince’s tricky guitar playing from time to time. It was so captivating that it drew me in, and I’m sure it was played at the opening of the album. The following Trojan Horse is a very beautiful number that blends Andrew’s crisp bass, Marcus’ melancholy saxophone, and Xavier’s piano melody. There is almost no guitar tone (although it may be contributing a little), and Prince may have participated by playing with the keyboard while holding a guitar. Way Back When, which Andrew later recorded on his album We Don’t Need No Base, has a hooky saxophone phrase intertwined with his loose bass groove, and is very catchy and addictive. It’s a play that makes you feel enlightened. Here, a very jazzy guitar solo is played by Prince at this particular place. Must listen. And Mind Of J, written by John Blackwell, is included on his band John Blackwell Project’s album 4Eva Jia. Therefore, a very light guitar cutting is included, but there is no guitar in this performance (the bonus DVDR version includes a guitar). However, the music is also good, and you can enjoy the thrilling and poignant jazz that unfolds. And Dandelion, included in Marcus Anderson’s album Limited Edition, is an elegant performance with Marcus’s saxophone coming to the fore, giving it a more live feel. The piano solo on Shaft, which has Marcus’ melancholy saxophone, is also amazing. 6-8 Joint, where the bass and drum rhythm section is interesting and Marcus’s phrase cuts solidly, There’s That, which has an impressive piano and singing saxophone, is a majestic song that will make you feel relaxed while drinking, but still feel sharp from the bottom of your heart. Dome is the only song in this live performance that features a vocoder. Finally, the madhouse-manor EBlues, which has the potential to become a single from the album, also has a precision reminiscent of N.E.W.S. This is an item that allows you to fully enjoy Prince’s world of jazz, with studio recordings included as a bonus. Comes with a DVD. There are two videos of John Blackwell, who can be said to be the de facto leader of NPG Q, performing this Mind Of J live with members of the John Blackwell Project, both of which have different arrangements. When you watch the video, you will be amazed at how skilled a drummer he is. Also, Mind Of J’s studio songs are included in the menu screen so that they can be listened to on the DVD player (because they could not be included on the CD due to recording time, they are summarized here as related to John Blackwell) ).
