Description

In addition to Costello in 1989, which was released at the same time, Taper Two Of Us seemed to like so-called pub rock artists, and recorded the stage of his ally Nick Lowe. Two Of Us released it on January 30, 1995, at a club gig at a venue called Wetlands. Speaking of Low’s January 1995 live sound source, the popular soundboard album “PHILADELPHIA 1995” is fresh in my memory, but it can be guessed from the fact that it was a performance on January 28th. Yes, the next gig was this time at Wetlands. So the setlist was the same…I thought, but instead of “Lonely Just Like Me,” which had been played in Philadelphia, the ballad “14 Days” from the then new album “THE IMPOSSIBLE BIRD” was sung. Masu. The way Lowe sings earnestly here is absolutely exquisite. What’s even more noteworthy is that the show didn’t end with the classic “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,” which was played at the finale of this year’s tour, and after that, they played songs from Lowe’s past albums. It was a great service that two songs were sung. Of course Philadelphia was also a great gig, but on this day the excitement was even more amazing, which probably made Lowe feel better. Also, the audience recording by Two Of Us is of the highest quality. While firmly capturing the intimate and lively sense of being that is unique to a club, the sound image is even more overwhelming. The excitement and momentum of the performance unique to a club that could not be fully conveyed in the sound board’s “PHILADELPHIA 1995” is vivid. After all, the best audience recording that fully inhaled the air of the day is exceptional, and at this level, there is no inferiority even if it was released on a press board. Since the sound quality is so high, I can understand the excitement that Lowe of this day served an encore more than usual. Not only that, it seems that this scene was a real surprise and recording started in the middle of the intro of “36 Inches High”. In addition, it is assumed that Two Of Us rushed forward here, and the sound image, which was already well-balanced, finally evolved into a sound board-like closeness (lol). When it came to this surprise encore, the surrounding audience seemed to have solidified their avid fans, and voices could be heard singing along to both songs. This further encore was probably the result of Lowe’s complacency in the face of such enthusiastic fans and excitement. This is also a scene that reminds me of how during the performance in Japan in the same year, the main part of the concert went on with a feeling of listening carefully, but the excitement suddenly became heated during the encore. Isn’t the masterpiece “PHILADELPHIA 1995” an outtake for a live album? It was a stereo sound board recording with a high degree of perfection that I thought, but this release allows you to enjoy a different kind of happy gig with the highest quality audience recording. With its rich sense of presence and powerful sound image, it is a superb sound source that is the perfect companion to “PHILADELPHIA 1995,” and once again this is the best item that everyone from beginners to enthusiasts can confidently recommend.
