Description

The final European tour of Miles Davis’ group with Keith Jarrett, in which Michael Henderson joined and Leon Chansler was invited to form a unique funk sound that was different from jazz and soul, has arrived at the ultimate clear and high-quality sound with the best view after many twists and turns. The final definitive version of the Turin, Italy performance has arrived! ! As autumn 1971 approached, Miles Davis’ group replaced Jack DeJohnette with Leon Chansler. To confirm the effectiveness of the change, they immediately set off on a tour for the last European tour with the genius Keith Jarrett, who was said to be Miles’ right-hand man at the time. The tour lasted for one month from October 21 to November 20, 1971, and the number of concerts was 21. From this European tour, the performance at Palazzo dello Sport in Turin, Italy on November 16, 1971, which had a blurry sound image as if it was covered with mist in the previous release, has been reborn as a clear sound image with good visibility thanks to the label’s own careful mastering. This sound source is familiar to long-time Miles fans, and it was first released more than 25 years ago by Moon Label under the nostalgic title “Voodoo Down”. It was a sad product that was not a complete version and had incomplete songs. Furthermore, poor quality images were circulated, and although this was a long version, it was in a fragmented state and it was said that there would be no complete tape left. However, the sound quality of that was not so good to today’s ears. This work has been remastered to the original master, and you can listen to the ideal Turin performance that is several ranks higher than the current strongest! ! As for the performance, Miles on this European tour is on the rise! Especially towards the end, they played a funky pet that made full use of the wah-wah, and on this final day, they stomped on the wah-wah from the very beginning. Keith was already working like it was his own band. Keith was indispensable to the Miles Group at this time, but he was in a different spirit as this was the last performance in Europe with this group. The funky organ cuts sharply into the simple and tight funk rhythm by Michael and Chansler, and even the growls are funky! By the way, have you noticed? The set list with this lineup was a parade of funk numbers, including “What I Say,” “Honky Tonk,” and “Funky Tonk”! Miles was in a good mood all the time, and after playing the important part, Keith said, “I understand,” and he made the sound undulate, giving the funk sound, which tends to be simple, a unique originality that is irresistible! However, Miles doesn’t just push a simple, all-out funk sound! He makes you cry with a melancholy phrase right after the funk, and Keith responds with a lyrical solo like “Facing You,” perfectly timing the tempo and properly calculating the beginning, development, and conclusion! Oh, and the double percussion by Mtume and Don Alias, which adds color to the funk-like rhythm of Michael and Chansler, is also amazing! While acting like a funk band, they coolly finish off the album with an overwhelming performance, sprinkling in gimmicks that you won’t notice unless you listen carefully! This is Miles!
