This is a complete supplementary recording of the four-night Fillmore West concert held from April 9th to 12th, 1970. The reason it’s called a “complete supplementary” version and not a complete version is that only one performance from those four nights had been officially released, so this is a complete version of the rest. The official release was the April 10th performance, titled “Black Beauty,” as fans will know it. At the time, most Miles Davis live performances were essentially collage-like works edited by Teo Macero, but “Black Beauty” was considered one of its selling points, offering the original, unedited performance. However, critics such as the late Yasuki Nakayama criticized it for being “not a very good performance,” and unfortunately, it never achieved a reputation among fans as a classic recording. However, as recordings from other days began to reach fans’ ears as collector’s items, the reputation of this Fillmore West concert dramatically changed. All four dates, April 9th, 11th, and 12th, have now been released as soundboard recordings, renowned as masterpieces. This release features three discs containing all four consecutive nights at Fillmore West, excluding the April 10th performance of “Black Beauty.” Each performance has been newly remastered to the highest quality ever, and the excellent jacket, which pays homage to “Black Beauty,” makes this a must-have collector’s item that perfectly complements the official “Black Beauty” album.
