Description

An alternate version of Michael Jackson’s masterpiece, “Off The Wall,” which includes many rare recordings, has already been released. Since the above release, we have been releasing more Michael Jackson-related recordings that have been unearthed since the late 2010s. The second volume is a two-disc set containing recordings from before and after the release of “Off The Wall.” First, Disc 1 is a title that should be called an expanded edition of “Off The Wall.” Although “Alternate Off The Wall” has already been released, this is composed of recordings that do not overlap with that. “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” made into a long version using a studio demo, a discovered demo of “Rock With You”, a long version of “Workin’ Day And Night” using a studio demo, the original version of “Get On The Floor” with big drums and different rhythm guitar, “Off The Wall (Soulful French Tour Remix)” which is a fan-made version with pleasant guitar cutting but somehow reminds me of Incognito’s predecessor Light of the World, a nice extended mix of “Girlfriend”, an unearthed demo of “She’s Out Of My Life”. And the shocking 1979 demo of “I Can’t Help It”, “Alternate Off The Wall” is different because it is a 1978 demo. The piano work by Stevie Wonder, which clearly has a more live feel, John Robinson’s just drumming, and Michael’s hard-working vocals are just too wonderful. Then there’s “It’s The Falling In Love,” which is 11 minutes long but never gets boring, and the extended version of “Burn This Disco Out,” which has a strong instrumental performance, and you can enjoy the other world of “Off The Wall.” But that’s not all. There’s also “Sunset Driver,” which can be considered an outtake, its fan-made but wonderful extended version, Michael’s solo version of “Don’t Matter To Me,” which appears for the first time, and the original demo of “Love Never Felt So Good,” and three other rare songs, which further deepen the charm of “Off The Wall.” Disc 2 begins with a maxi-single reproduction of “This Is It.” This song was written by Michael and Paul Anka in 1980, shortly after the release of “Off The Wall,” and was originally recorded under the title “I Never Heard.” It was supposed to be included on Anka’s album “Walk a Fine Line,” but it was shelved along with other collaborations by the two, “Love Never Felt So Good” and “It Don’t Matter To Me.” Michael took the song’s cassette tape from Anka without permission, and Anka threatened legal action if the recording was not returned. Michael’s version of “This Is It” was reportedly found in a box containing tapes with only Michael’s voice and piano accompaniment, and the song was described as a bare-bones recording. It’s only a 23-second snippet, but it’s the first demo on Disc 2. Michael later returned the tape, but Anka claimed that Michael had copied the recording of “I Never Heard” and renamed it “This Is It” with only Michael’s singing. Meanwhile, in 1990, Anka allowed Puerto Rican R&B artist Sapphire to record “This Is It,” which she included under the original title “I Never Heard” on her second studio album, “I Wasn’t Born Yesterday,” in 1991. The recording can be found on the following titles: It was later reworked by John McClain and Marvin Warren for the movie This Is It, with the Jackson brothers providing backing vocals. This 2009 version of This Is It has nothing to do with the movie, but was used for promotional purposes. Meanwhile, Anka remade the song, adding never-before-heard vocals from I Never Heard to an upbeat instrumental, for his 2013 album Duets. This release includes all existing recordings, including the full version not included on the This Is It album, to give a full look at This Is It. Also included are rare recordings from Off The Wall, and more unearthed since the release of Alternate Off The Wall. A string-backed version of Rock With You, and a very elegant slow version made by a fan. And then there’s the demo by writer Rod Temperton, which is interesting because the lyrics are barely finished (probably the title hadn’t been decided yet), but it has a cut that sounds very similar to the sound of his band Heatwave, making it even funkier. There’s the demo and Wings version of “Girlfriend” by Paul McCartney, and “It’s Falling In Love” by writer Carole Bayer Sager. And then there’s another fan-made extended version of “Burn This Disco Out,” which is also faithful to the original and enjoyable. And then there’s “Don’t Matter To Me” by Drake (the one on Disc 1 features Michael’s vocal part), which is included on his second album, Scorpion. I’m not sure how Drake got hold of the tapes of Michael and Paul Anka’s ’80 recording, but he used them to make a pseudo-duet. Apparently there was a demo of Michael singing with piano backing, but it’s possible that the recording on Disc 1 is that, but it’s unclear. And the last one is an instrumental outtake of “A Baby Smiles” from the “Off The Wall” period, which is likely a fake. It reminds me of Swing Out Sister’s “Breakout,” which means it precedes them, but we’ll see.
